Kashmir windstorm storms the House, Legislators demand assessment of losses, relief to sufferers | | | Bashir Assad
Jammu, Mar 20; cutting across party lines, legislators Tuesday demanded immediate assessment of losses suffered on account of a nightlong windstorm that blew away hundreds of rooftops and uprooted an even greater number of trees and threw the Valley's electric power supply system haywire. As soon as the House met here today opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLAs raised the issue vociferously and demanded immediate assessment of losses caused due to the gusty winds that played havoc in Kashmir valley and parts of Jammu division last night. A R Veeri of PDP, M Y Tarigami of CPI(M) , Hakim Muhammad Yasin of PDF, Nazir Gurezi of National Conference, Aijaz Jan of Congress, Independent Er. Rashid supported by all other opposition MLAs from Kashmir division were on legs demanding a statement from the government on the issue. For about half an hour, question hour remained suspended as the opposition MLAs repeatedly raised the issue which prompted Deputy Speaker Sartaj Madni who was officiating today to direct the government to come out with a statement on the issue. "Entire House including me are concerned about the situation, the government should come out with a statement which could satisfy all the MLAs" Madni said in his ruling. However, this was still going on that BJP and NPP members led by Harshdev Singh raised the issue of alleged discrimination in grant of crop compensation under the Natural Calamity Fund in the Jammu region and trooped into the Well of the House. Singh asserted that no compensation had been granted to the affected people under crop compensation in Udhampur and Samba districts. On Deputy Speaker Sartaj Madni giving directions to the government to reply on the issue, Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla said that the matter would be looked into. Unsatisfied by the reply, the JKNPP members staged the walkout. Bhalla, however, said that all the Deputy Commissioners have been directed to gear up the administration and all the departments have been put on high alert in the wake of the storm. On this opposition MLAs took to their seats and the normal business of the House was restored. |
