More than BJP, RSS needs course correction | | By Yash Bhasin | 3/20/2012 11:29:12 PM |
| Mauled in the recently held assem bly elections in UP, Punjab and Uttarkhand and retarded by the parent organization, the RSS for its failure to come up to their expectations, BJP is in a serious introspection mode, realising the need for course correction. But at the same time there is a strong feeling among a section of the party leaders and rank and file that RSS, to a great extent, is also responsible for the dwindling stocks of BJP. The undue interference by the RSS in the day today affairs of the BJP and thrusting its favourites at high positions in the political party and trying to impose its agenda on the political outfit, is believed to be responsible, to a great extent, for BJP's stagnation. It has been customary with the RSS to take credit for any gains achieved by the BJP, while in the case of its reverses, the RSS shirks to share the responsibility for the same. The taunt by the RSS through its mouth piece publications, the "Organizer" and "Panch Janya" that in UP BJP has an army of leaders, while the party is lacking in workers and that the BJP is suffering from Congress patch, though may be right, yet this publically mocking at the saffron political outfit by its parent organization, has not been taken as a friendly advise by the BJP. Can a BJP leader or even an ordinary worker dare openly criticise RSS for its any failure or wrong decisions taken by it, is a mute question, in the minds of the BJP leaders. This attitude of RSS is termed by some as display of arrogance, claiming all the wisdoms lies solely with the RSS leaders. The dismal performance by the BJP in UP assembly elections is interpreted as failure of the national party president of the party, Nitin Gadkari, thrust on the party earlier by the RSS, as well as of its point man Sanjay Joshi, who was put as incharge of elections in UP by Gadkari, obviously on the bidding of RSS. Sanjay Joshi, an RSS Pracharak, who was, some time back, stripped off his post as party general secretary, incharge organisation, in the wake allegations of his involvement in a sex scandal, was recently reinstated by Gadkari, despite stiff opposition from some BJP leaders and was made incharge of assembly elections in UP. The Gujarat Chief Minister Narinder Modi, who has a long standing feud with Joshi, openly snubbed the party president, by declining to campaign anywhere in assembly elections in 5 states. However, Narinder Modi himself had been the RSS favourite in the past and was rated as the most preferred candidate for the post of prime minister by the RSS elements and supporters in the BJP. The over patronage by RSS to Modi made the Gujarat chief minister so arrogant that he has been behaving to have over grown his party. The snub by the RSS in the past to the senior most BJP leader L.K.Advani, with RSS Chief publically advising him to make the ground for younger leadership, has lowered Advani's stock in public estimation as well as his acceptance as future prime minister by the BJP's coalition partners in the NDA. This has been a long standing practice with RSS to give over weightage and leverage to those, who it feels, submit to its over lordship and not deify its wishes. Instead of personal conduct of a leader, his clean public life, acceptance by the people at large and competence to deliver, those believed to be loyal to RSS are given preference. Invariably these favourites of RSS in the Jang Sung in the past and in the BJP at present, have brought a bad name to both the parent organisation and the saffron political outfit, by indulging in corrupt practices and their involvement in scams. A former national BJP president, Bangaru Lak shman, caught on camera accepting cash bribe, in a sitting operation, was originally an RSS man. After he was caught on camera, accepting the bribe, the RSS dubbed him as a "failed swayam sevak". But instances are not lacking where some senior RSS leaders have recommended and even pressed for allotment of petrol pumps, LPG distribution agencies and other such contracts, either to their relatives or favourite party workers. But when the favouritism and irregularity committed becomes a scandal, the RSS leaders wash their hands off the same, leaving the BJP ministers and leaders to face the music. In our own state of J&K, Chamanlal Gupta was thrust on the Jang Sung by the RSS in 1967, when he was fielded as candidate from a Jammu city constituency, in the state assembly elections. After his victory RSS insisted on his appointment as general secretary of the Pradesh unit of Jang Sung. This led to a revolt in the party. To get their will implemented, RSS went to the extent of forcing the Jang Sung to take action against those who had defeated their candidate in the party elections. Not only this, the rebels were also subjected to social boycott and were pushed to the wall. This resulted in vertical split in the party. RSS went on giving long rope and preferential treatment to professor Gupta, leaving no stone unturned, to make him the supreme boss in the Jang Sung and later in the BJP. In the process many dedicated and upright party leaders were either marginalised or forced to leave the party and even retire from politics. But presently the BJP is facing the consequences of its giving over weightage and putting all its eggs in the basket of Chamanlal Gupta, with vacuum of leadership being faced. When Atal Bihari Vajpayee's stock was rising in the public, many senior RSS leaders, feeling jealous of his growing stature, made all bids to denigrate him, even going to the extent of his character assassination. Later the RSS tried to cut to size L.K.Advani, who had built the BJP and brought it at the centre stage in the politics of the country, through his organisational skill. The bugling and somersault by the RSS over separate state of Jammu is still fresh in the memory of the people in this part of the country. The RSS first hijacked the movement for separate state of Jammu or reo rganisation of J&K state, which though at a low key, was getting momentum in 2000, particularly after the NC resolution for greater autonomy to J&K was passed by the state legislature. One after another social, cultural organisations and even small political groups were veering around the movement for separate Jammu state. At this stage RSS jumped into the band wagon of the movement and hijacked the same through its strong organisational structure in the country as a whole. After the RSS failed to convince the BJP to fall in line and support the demand for separate Jammu state, it floated a parallel organisation Jammu State Morcha, to spearhead the movement for creation of separate Jammu state. It also fought J&K state assembly elections in 2002, on this plank, fielding its own candidates in almost all the 37 assembly constituencies in Jammu region. But as a result of the division of the common vote bank of saffron outfits between the BJP and JSM candidates, both faced debacle at the hustings. Soon after this debacle RSS washed its hands off the movement for separate Jammu state and even dissolved JSM. Thus its sabotage the movement, though unwittingly. The demand and movement for a separate state was a political one, which does not fall within the domain of RSS, which claims itself to be a cultural organisation not directly meddling in politics. The correct course for RSS would be to keep itself confined to the task of consolidation of nationalist forces and imbibing high moral character among its workers. |
