Gang of transformer thieves busted in Anantnag | | | Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, MAR 20: Anantnag police today claimed that it busted a gang of transformer thieves which was operating in the twin districts of south Kashmir, Anantnag and Kulgam for last one year and arrested four persons in this connection. Police also recovered 240 kgs of copper coil and 5 transformers from the possession of arrested people. SP, Operations, Anantnag, Zahid Malik, at a press conference,said, "On the basis specific information about the movement of thieves in the area falling within the jurisdiction of police station Aishmuqam a police party led by SHO Aishmuqam, Muzaffar Ahmad, during the intervening night of of 13 and 14 March laid naka at different link roads. A maruti car bearing number JK02AG / 4243 was apprehended during naka near Silgam from which a bag of tools lying under the seats was recovered,". He said that the suspects were shifted to police station and during the interrogation they confessed their involvement in the thefts of transformers. "During the interrogation they confessed that they have stolen at least 36 transformers from different areas of Anantnag and Kulgam during past one year,"SP said. He said that the gang was well organized and fully equipped in dislodging and removing the copper coils from newly installed transformers by 'Jagwar' company. He said that they would sell one copper coil against 15000 rupees in the market. Sp further said that the investigation into the case is on and more people are likely to be arrested in coming days. On the alleged involvement of the PDD officials in thefts of transformers, the police officer said that nothing like that has come out during the investigation so far. He identified the people arrested in connection with the case as Manzoor Ahmad Lone of Redwani, his brother Rayees Ahmad Lone, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat of Kulgam and Bilal Ahmadf Malla of Wanpoo. Pertinently more than 82 transformers were stolen from different areas of Anantnag and Kulgam districts of south Kashmir last year. |
