Chattisingpora massacre: Man recalls the day he lost his 2 sons | | | ET Report SRINAGAR, Mar 21: Even after 12 years of the Chattisinghpora massacre of 36 Sikhs, the gory incident continues to haunt Daljit Singh, who had lost his two sons. The incident, which took place on the evening of March 20, 2000, completed 12 years yesterday. The victims were lined up for execution outside a gurdwara at Chattisinghpora by the militants who wore army uniforms and spoke Urdu. Recalling the fateful night, Daljit said, "It was around 1 am when the announcement from public address system of the local gurdwara was made, asking sikh male members to come out of their houses and assemble near gurdwara. Those who reached the gurdwara never returned homes as all of them were shot dead by the militants." "After I reached the massacre site, the bodies of my two sons lay there along with other victims," he added, saying, "It was a very painful moment for me and I still find it hard to express it in words." Daljit said the horrifying scene continues to haunt him even after 12 years of the incident. "I will never be able to forget the incident and the killing of my sons in this life," he said. He, however, regretted that none of the state governments had showed seriousness in getting the incident investigated. "We have time and again demanded a probe into the incident by some impartial agency like CBI but our demand seems to have fallen on deaf ears," he said. He said it was a matter of shame that the successive state governments had so far not bothered to initiate even a judicial probe into the matter. |
