Jammu, Mar 21: Former Deputy Chief Minister and senior leader of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Muzaffar Hussain Beig today appealed to the union government to constitute a Judicial Commission to probe assets of Abdullah family.
"The Government of India should constitute a high level Judicial Commission and probe the assets of Union Minister Farooq Abdullah and his Chief Minister son Omar Abdullah," Beig told reporters at a press conference here this afternoon. Beig said that centre should find out from where Abdullah's' raised assets worth crores as the father of Farooq Abdullah and former Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah was simply a teacher.
Beig's statement came in the backdrop of allegations levelled against him by the National Conference Spokesman in a local Urdu daily. "Sheikh Abdullah since Independence played a divisive politics and it is the National Conference that is responsible for regional wedge in Jammu and Kashmir," alleged PDP stalwart.
He said that decades old National Conference ruling created sense of alienation among the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh. "PDP wanted to unite people of all the three regions but the National Conference is having sense of insecurity and they are not allowing us to raise the issues of importance in Assembly session," he added.
He alleged that National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah during his campaign for plebiscite, struck a secret understanding with enemies of India and received not only political but monetary support from them. "I would have preferred not to discuss the role of NC leaders, particularly that of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who is no more with us. But, since I have been challenged by the NC to deal with historical facts, I will do so, but with a heavy heart," he said.
Reacting to what he called false and defamatory allegations leveled against him by NC, Beig said, "The gist of the allegations is that I have been making irresponsible and false allegation against the NC leaders past and present. I have been advised to read the history of Kashmir and the history of NC struggle before attacking NC leaders."
He alleged that NC created mis-trust between the people of Kashmir and the people of Jammu. "The NC created ethnic gap between Kashmiri speaking and non-Kashmiri speaking people in the State as well as fragmented Kasmiris in Bakra-Sher factions. After initially supporting accession of our state with the Union of India, Sheikh Abdullah took a U-turn and challenged the accession when he realized that the Centre cannot permit him to convert the state into his fiefdom.
He (Sheikh) founded Plebiscite Front and unleashed a communal and hate campaign against Union of India, which poisoned minds of at least two generations of Kashmir and created the trust deficit between Kashmiri Muslims and the Union of India, which trust deficit persists even now," Beig claimed.
PDP leader alleged that during his campaign for plebiscite, Sheikh Abdullah struck a secret understanding with enemies of India and received not only political but monetary support from them. "That introduced the curse of monetary corruption in the state politics, which over the time has become a great menace and a social and political norm. Sheikh Abdullah also changed his political agenda, like an opportunist, around 1972 when he realized that Pakistan had become a weak state due to its break up and the creation of Bangladesh. He also felt enraged and humiliated when Z A Bhutto got a white paper published showing that members of Plebiscite Front and Abdullah family had been receiving money from Pakistani agencies," he claimed.
Beig alleged that when Sheikh Abdullah was re-installed as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir without a single member of his party in the Legislature, "he showed his gratitude by engineering defection of 12 or 14 Congress legislators to NC." "This was the beginning of the scourge of political defection not only in our state but also in the entire country. It is noteworthy that he was glad to become Chief Minister with the support of Congress legislators whom he had earlier called 'worms of gutter' who should be subjected to social boycott," he added.
PDP leader claimed that before his death, Sheikh installed his son Dr Farooq as president of NC thus paving way for his son's elevation as Chief Minister after his death-ignoring more senior members of NC party. "Earlier he had humiliated and kicked out Mirza A Beigh, who was the only prominent person who had stood by him and projected him as the most prominent leader of the Stat," claimed Beig.
He further said "These actions of Sheikh Sahib encouraged a brand of politics of betrayal and established family rule in the State. Soon after Sheikh Sahib became Chief Minister Plebiscite Front was dissolved and the 22-years struggle of people under the Front was characterized as 'political waywardness'. This was Sheikh Sahib's tribute to hundreds of people who had died and thousands of people who were jailed during the struggle," added the senior PDP leader.
He reiterated that soon after Sheikh Sahib became Chief Minister, he agreed to the amendment of the Article 368 of the Constitution of India which further diminished the power and jurisdiction of our state legislature," he claimed. Beig further said "Sheikh Abdullah in the budget session of 1981 or 1982 made a statement that Article 370 was not a "Verse of Quran" that cannot be changed. This statement was made to please the communal elements."
He stressed that when IT authorities raided the homes and offices of a few persons in Srinagar including his relatives, Dr Farooq Abdullah who was then a Member of Parliament, obstructed the IT officials. "Sheikh Sahib held a public meeting in Iqbal Park Srinagar and challenged government of India alleging that they were interfering in the state on the strength of Army which was positioned on the Kashmir soil. Sheikh Sahib had earlier welcomed entry of Indian army in the state and called them "Tayran Ababeel" -some thing like God's Army. But when IT authorities disturbed his relatives, he impliedly alleged that Indian Army was an occupation force.," claimed Beig.
Former Deputy CM alleged during the elections to legislative assembly in 1987, Dr Farooq engineered most infamous rigged elections.
"His victims included many youngmen like Yosuf Shah who, after his disillusion with political process, crossed over to Pakistan and is now the head of the United Jehad Council. The other victim was Yasin Malik, who also became a militant and is now chairman of the Liberation Front. No less than Vohra, the Governor of our state, has admitted the connection between the rigging of elections in 1987 and ensuing militancy in our state," he said.
On Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's political inclination, he said, "It was revealed when on a visit to Pakistan he (Omar) reportedly tendered apology to the Pakistan for the role of his grandfather. Was he hinting at Sheikh Sahib's initial support of accession with India and his betrayal of Plebiscite movement?" he asked.
"The role of Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister is known to all. Misgovernance wide spread corruption, murder of about 112 to 120 innocent young boys and girls in Kashmir double talk on AFSPA and unmatched hunger to remain in unprincipled power," he alleged.
