Legal Stars, Sunrise win opening ties
JKHC-CJ declares open Bar's Sports Meet

JAMMU, Mar 21: Legal Stars XI and Sunrise XI won inaugural matches to move into the next round of quarterfinals in the cricket tournament of five-day long annual sports meet of Bar Association of Jammu got underway at University of Jammu ground, here today. In the first match, Legal Stars trounced Dogra XI by 39 runs. Batting first, after winning the toss, Legal Services set a target of 95 runs for the loss of four wickets in given 10 overs, which, in reply, Dogra XI could not chase exhausting their quota of overs for 55 runs losing five wickets. Gourav Jamwal was star striker, who made unbeaten 45 runs studded with six boundaries and one hit over the fence. AP Singh ad Sanjay Bhagga contributed 17 and 11 runs respectively. From Dogra XI, Pankaj Dubey took two wickets while Manvir Singh bagged one.
Later, Dogra XI could not maintain the required run rate and played their full 10 overs making 55 runs with five wickets in hand. Opener, Pankaj Dubey, who was retired hurt, remained top scorer with 26 runs. No other batsman could touch the double figure mark. From Legal Stars XI, Vivek took two wickets.
In another match of the day, Sunrise XI defeated Dare Devils by eight wickets. Earlier, batting first, Dare Devils bowled out cheaply for 35 runs in 9.3 overs. Sumit was top scorer with eight runs. Sheeraj and Daleep took two wickets each from Sunrise.
In reply, Sunrise attained the goal making 38 runs for two wickets sparing 3.1 overs of their innings. Rajesh Thusoo was main contributor with 16 runs, followed by Sanjay, who added nine runs to the total. In all, 16 teams are taking part in this knock-out competition. While, the first round of pre-quarterfinals shall be of 10 overs, the quarterfinals round shall be of 12 overs each. The semifinals will have 15 overs and the final will be a 20 overs game. The five-day long sports meet was declared open by Chief Justice of J&K High Court, Justice FM Ibrahim Kalifulla in a well attended function. He was accompanied by Justice Hasnain Masoodi and Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu, Prof MPS Ishar. Host of the meet, president of Bar Association of Jammu, BS Slathia and his team were among those present in the inaugural function. Meanwhile, according to the chief organizer of the event, advocate Suresh Sharma said, "In this five-day sports meet, competition in athletics shall also take place for remaining two days of the meet in both men and women sections.
