Programme on 'Forests For Sustainable Livelihood' held

JAMMU, Mar 21: People's Education and Association for Culture and Equality (PEA-CE) in collaboration with World Wide Fund for Nature India (WWF) organized a function under the theme - "Forests For Sustainable Livelihood" at village Meer, Pan-chari in District Udham-pur.Sarpanches, panches, teachers, social activists and students of various institutions of the block participated in the programme which was held by PEACE & WWF under the aegis of Ministry of Environment, Government of India. Narinder Sharma, President PEACE was the brain behind function who coordinated with various departments and involved people in saving forests. Various speakers including sarpanch and panches while expressing their concern over deforestation urged the authorities to check illegal felling of trees and fast depleting forest cover in Pancheri area. They said that depleting forest cover has adversely affected the climate of area. Sarpanches and Panches urged the government to plant more saplings in area and launch afforestation drive. They added that Pancheri area was having enough potential for medicinal plants and other herbs which if encouraged world change the economical profile of area.
Similarly, the Pancheri area was also having good potential for floriculture and many farmers into the trade were exporting flowers to Jammu and other areas. This was for the first time that after Kishtwar, Pancheri Block had witnessed cultivation of Saffron. Such kind of cultivation they said should be encouraged. Narinder Sharma, President PEACE in his address urged the forest department to pay heed to the genuine and just demands of Sarpanches and Panches of Pancheri who, he said were having first hand information about deforestation.
He said, very shortly a medical camp will also be organized in Pancheri hospital for checkup of people of the area and assured that NGO PEACE will train women of the area in cutting and' tailoring and asked the local Sarpanches and Panches to identify women interested in such vocational trainings.
He said Pancheri being remotest area of region needs special attention for its economic development. Later a drawing competition was also organized in which Vijay Katoch of Himalayan Public School Meer stood first, Komal Kalotia of Middle School Meer stood second and Madhu Devi of Govt. Middle School maintained third position.
Tehsildar Mulkh Raj, Zonal Education Officer Madan Lal, CDPO Om Parkash Sharma (KAS) distributed prices amongst the winners and also honoured some govt. officials for performing their duties with dedication.
Prominent among others who were also addressed the gathering were BMO (Pancheri) J.K Dogra, SHO Nishant Gupta, Forest Officer Ayush Gupta, Jung Bahadur, Bhupinder Singh, Sunil Sharma, Mohd. Ashraf, JE (PWD) Gopal Krishan, Headmaster Sham Lal, JE (PDD) Aditya Dev Singh, Sandoor Singh, Parkash Singh, Falail Singh and Lakshman Singh.
