Two more killed, death toll in snow avalanche reaches 3 in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Mar 21: With the death of two more people, the death toll in the avalanche reached to three in Gurez sector, where warning for fresh avalanche was issued today.
Official sources said a vehicle, carrying labourers of Hindustan Construction Corporation (HCC) came under a huge avalanche at village Badwan in Gurez on March 19 evening.
Two labourers and driver of the vehicle were rescued by a joint rescue party of Army, administration, police and local residents.The injured were rushed to hospital where one of them succumbed.
Two more HCC labourers, who were also buried under the snow,had died.With this a total of three labourers of HCC were killed in the incident.Meanwhile, a fresh snow avalanche warning has been issued in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.Following fresh snowfall during the past 24 hours, there is a danger of avalanche in Drass, Bhimbat, Kaksar, Gumri, Matayan in
Ladakh region, head of the disaster management in Kashmir Aamir Ali said.
He said medium danger warning exists for Razdan top, Kanzalwan, Dawar, Neeruru, Baruab, Chakwali, while low danger warning has been issued for Dhudi, SM Hill, Gugaldara, Machhil
near the Line of Control and Gagangir, Sonamargand Zojila.
People living in these areas have been advised to take precautions especially in Drass area on the Srinagar-Leh highway, of Kargil district where high danger avalanche warning has been issued.
They were asked to restrict their movements in avalanche prone areas. However, in case of emergency they are advised to take extra precautions. Last month on February 22 night, 16 Army personnel, including five Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were killed after snow avalanche struck a 109 Infantry Brigade headquarter at Markote Dawar. More than 20 others were rescued.
On the same day, three Army personnel were killed by a snow avalanche at Sonamarg in central Kashmir district of Ganderbal. The avalanche last month also killed three army personnel in Central Kashmir district of Ganderbal when an avalanche hit an army camp at tourist place of Sonamarg.
The bodies of the deceased soldiers were rescued and sent to their native villages after paying floral tributes here by senior Army officers, including Army Commander, Northern Command and GOC 15 Corps.Bodies of four Army personnel and one Border Security Force (BSF) jawan remained buried under snow in Keran sector.
A seven-member joint patrol party of Army and BSF came under a avalanche near a forward picket in January this year. Bodies of BSF sub inspector and Army jawan were recovered.
