Wildlife deptt fits telemeters on Bar-headed geese at Gharana | | | early times report JAMMU, Mar 22- Department of Wildlife Protection, Jammu, in technical assistance and collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun has launched a research programme to study bird migration and habitat use pattern of some migratory bird species including Bar-headed geese and blacked necked crane in Jammu and Kashmir especially Gharana Conservation Wetland in Jammu and high altitude wetlands in Ladakh particularly Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary. The study project was prepared by the Department of Wildlife Protection in consultation and technical collaboration of Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun and approved by the MOEF, Government of India recently. A research team comprising of Wildlife Warden, Jammu Tahir Shawl and scientists from Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun, Dr. Ainul Hussain and Dr. Bilal Habib fitted satellite transmitters (platform transmitter terminal) on two Bar-headed geese at Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve on 19th of March, 2012. The Gharana Wetland Conservation Reserve 40 kms. From Jammu near India-Pakistan international border in R. S. Pura sector on 19th March. The bird capturing and satellite transmitter mounting operation was conducted by them successfully with the assistance of expert bird trappers from Bihar Ali Hussain and Sikander. Samples from four other Bar-headed geese including Serum, oral and cloacal swabs were also collected during this operation. Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Jammu Region, Upender Pachnanda monitored the release of transmitter-fitted Bar-headed geese during this operation. The reccee of the area of Gharana Wetland was conducted in advance on 18th of March, 2012 by the Wildlife Warden Jammu with the Range Officer Wetlands, Vijay Singh and Wetland field staff alongwith bird trappers. This exercise if considered as hall mark and a historic milestone to the field of avian research, bird migration and conservation of wetlands. This study will also help to explore whether there is any link between bar headed geese population of Gharana in Jammu and high altitude lakes of Ladakh Region. |
