Jammu agricultural sector unattended | | | Pankhuri Aggarwal
Jammu, Mar 22: The agriculture sector of the Jammu state is in a condition of real mess. Neither the government nor the farmers are cooperating in the usual manner so as to solve the problem and carve out greater profits. Government is involved in their problems and corruption and on the other hand the poor farmers are just acting as mediators to them, these poor people are not getting any compensation under various schemes and they are troubling themselves and their time plus money. "There are various schemes introduced by the central government for us like providing zero percent interest free loans from the banks, diesel based pumps, ground water irrigation system, various other subsidies", said, Ramu Mishra, a farmer. Another farmer, Shavam Lal Gupta said, "A central sponsored scheme was launched three years back to provide water pumps to the dry and arid areas of Jammu region so that farmers do not suffer during the harvest season but even after so many years of its launching, there is no proper implementation of the scheme and even maximum of the farmers also do not know about all these schemes as well". Concerned sources said, "Department has received a total of one thousand and forty two hundred pump sets and two thousand sprayers which were purchased two years back, but only few hundreds have been distributed to the farmers, while other are gathering dust in the stores. It is pertinent to mention here that while irrigation by canals is major source of water to the farmers, but there are number of villages where canal water does not reach and cultivators are dependent on ground water for irrigation". They further added, "Even if electric pumps are made available to the farmers, even then they are in low hands because those arid areas are facing lot of power shortage and that may play a major havoc to the farmers for their crops if dependent only on these electric pumps". Himat Ram, a farmer said, "A number of poor farmers have to suffer due to pathetic attitude of the department particularly those cultivators whose farms fall away from canals". Director of Agriculture Jammu, Bala Sharma said, "We have always promoted the agriculture sector of the state by introducing various training programs and opening call centers for help to the farmers, further we are also making sure that various new facilities like chemical fertiliser & pesticide and their judicious use, prevention of farming accidents are made available to the maximum number of farmers". The latest statistics show that there are around thirty nine villages in Bishnah and one hundred and fifty five villages in RS pura and around fifty percent of total land in the Jammu state is under agricultural land. The state needed self-reliance and prosperity in agriculture sector as the state had limited annual income ranging between Rs 3200 crore and Rs 3500 crore. The agricultural land has also shrunk and there is also need to develop progressive agriculture by introducing new schemes to overcome the farmers' losses. New Budget should be introduced to focus on agriculture and its allied sectors. |
