Blasting Abdullah Myth
Yash Bhasin3/23/2012 11:13:14 PM
It is for the first time that a main stream Kashmiri
leader has charged Shiekh Mohd Abdullah of betraying the Indian nation, to fulfill his over-riding ambition of becoming an absolute ruler of Kashmir. The PDP leader, a former deputy chief minister in Azad headed Congress-PDP coalition government and senior cabinet minister in Mufti headed coalition government Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, has not only charged Shiekh Mohd. Abdullah of virtual sedition by trying to wreck J&K's accession with India and hob-nobbing with foreign powers and anti India elements in Kashmir and also poisoning the minds of Kashmiris against India thus creating a distrust between the people of Kashmir and those in the rest of the country, to fulfill his personal ambition of absolute power. Tracing the pre partition history, Beigh has charged Abdullah for spliting the Kashmiri movement against the autocre atic rule of Dogra kings, by pushing the leaders from Jammu like Ghulam Abbas to the wall, to fulfill his own ambition of becoming the supreme leader of Kashmir. However, Muzaffar Beigh has not gone to dig deep into the origin and entry of Sheikh Abdullah into Kashmir politics. The historical facts reveal that Sheikh Abdullah as a political leader of Kashmir was infact the creation of British imperialists, who prompted and helped him to raise a banner of revolt against Maharaja Hari Singh. The British had their own motive to corner and put in tight spot the Maharaja, in order to pressurise him for giving lease of Gilgit administration to them, to strengthen their strategic position against the then newly expanding Russian empire.
The British also entertained grudge against Maharaja Hari Singh, for his stand taken in the Round Table Conference in London of the rulers of princely states in British India, which was supportive of freedom movement of India launched by Congress and other freedom fighting groups in the country. Although in the past the Kashmiri separatist leaders have also sharply criticized Sheikh Abdullah, but they have done so for his pro India stand and allegedly betraying the interests of Kashmiris by surrendering the same before India. The mainstream Kashmiri leaders have so far been holding Shiekh Abdullah as a holy cow or a prophet, picking holes in whose character and role is considered sac-rilige. However, Muzaffar Beigh has been apologatic in making sweeping attacks on Shiekh Abdullah admitting that he has been leveling counter charges against the tallest leader of Kashmir and his decendents Dr. Farooq and Omar Abd-ullah, piqued over serious allegations and vilification campaign launched by the National Conference against him, charging him of ammassing huge wealth and receiving monetary benefits from the state governor Jagmohan, to work against the interests of Kashmiris.
As for Sheikh Abdullah creating distrust between Jammu and Kashmir, Muzaffar Beigh has only reffered to the pre partition and little after partition history of Shiekh Abdullah managing to push the Muslim leaders from Jammu to Pakistan. But he has not reffered to the out and out anti Jammu policies and programs pursued by Sheikh Abdullah soon after coming to power in the state. Right from the day one, the NC government headed by Sheikh Abdullah besides adopting policies of discrimination against Jam-mu region in all the fields, the Shiekh also indulged in humilating and abusing the Dogras, by bracketing them with the dynastic Dogra rulers who were alleged of committing atrotics on the Kashmiris.
Shiekh Abdullah in his first term as prime minister of the state not only pursued anti Jammu policies, but he also communalised the atmosphere by taking certain steps with communal overtones. Winding up the district of Reasi, he created a muslim majority district of Doda and also ousted from the administration some highly efficient Hindu officers. He also aimed at dismembering Jammu region by separating muslim majority areas of districts Rajouri-Poonch and a newly created Doda from Jammu and creating Greater Kashmir. Not only this, but Sheikh Abdullah's first regime from 1947 to 1953 was most repressive, scutling all democratic rights of the people, tolerating no dissent, aiming at establishing an authoratian rule. Towards this end, all those in Kashmir who were opposed to him, were branded as Pakistanis and pushed across the border to PoK or Pakistan while those from Jammu opposing him were dubbed as communalists and subjected to all sorts of atrocities and humilation. His reign of supression and anti Jammu policies, coupled with separatists mindset betrayed by him, led to a strong and lengthy agitation by Praja Parished in the length and breadth of Jammu region, which further created a chism between Kashmiris and the people of Jammu. This agitation exposed the real character, intent and mindset of Sheikh Abdullah and he shed the mask of securalism and loyalty to India by questioning the feasibility of J&K's accession with India. He even started hob-nobbing with the foriegn powers for carving out an independent sovreign state of Kashmir. His design was however, thwarted with dismissale of his government and his arrest on August 13, 1953. His skin deep secura-lism and preference for democratic and secular India was exposed and he formed a new political outfit, the Plebisite Front, advocating holding of Plebisite for deciding the future of Jammu and Kashmir, for remaining with India, joining Pakistan or becoming independent. Spilling the beans about Sheikh Abdullah's political ambition and preference for independent Kashmir, with himself as its absolute ruler, his own biological discendents have in the recent past stated that his endorsement of accession with India was only under the compulsion of the situation created then, while at hert he wanted Kashmir to remain independent. One of his grand daughter (daughter of his daughter) in an article " Shiekh Abdullah's misunderstood politics" published in some newspapers over a year ago, has stated that if Sheikh Abdullah had his way, he would have Kashmir as an independent soverign state. He had to endorse accession with India under the compulsion of the situation created by Pak aggression in Kashmir, making independent Kashmir a difficult solution. Later Sheikh Abdullah's younger son, Mustafa Kamal has also endorsed these views of his niece. But Pak aggression in J&K was not the only factor which prompted Sheikh Abdullah to endorse J&K's accession with India. It was also his over-riding ambition to be at the helm of affiars in the state which motivated him to prefer India over Pakistan. He had sent his emissry to Pakistan to meet Mohd Ali Jinah for settling terms for J&K to acceed to that country conveying that the power in the state should be handed over to Sheikh Abdullah. But Jinah had preference for his supporters in the Muslim Conference in Kashmir, like Ghulam Abbas, Quyoom and Ibrahim. Against this Indian Prime Minister Nehru was all out for Sheikh Abdullah and was dead set against Maharaja Hari Singh.
It was the fulfillment of his own ambition for power that motivated Abdullah to prefer India over Pakistan. Remaining independent of Kashmir appeared impossible as a result of belligrant attitude of Pakistan, whose rulers, mainly the Governor General Jinah was all set to grab Kashmir with force. Sheikh Abdullah's oppert-uanism and timidity, camof-aluged under bravode, can be assessed from the letter of virtual appology he wrote from jail to Maharaja Hari Singh, little before he was actually released from the jail. He pledged unflinching loyalty to the Maharaja and his government and assured him of good conduct, if he was release from the jail. But after he was actually released in the back drop of new situation created in the sub continent and in the state and Nehru's precondition for release of Sheikh Abdullah and transfer of power to him in the state, for accepting J&K accession with India, Sheikh Abdullah left no stone untur-ned to take vengeance on the Maharaja and humilating him, ultimately prevailing upon Nehru for Hari Singh to abdicate.
