| Draft bill to curb use of polythene in the offing | | | Jammu, January 23 In order to curb the use of polythene/ plastic bags the state pollution control board has prepared a draft bill to deal with the menace and the same is under active consideration of the state government. In its written reply to the question raised by MLC Arvinder Singh, the state government informed the upper house that as per recent directions of the High Court, the draft bill has been published in the newspapers inviting comments and suggestions from the people. Immediately after the bill is finalized and enacted the issue can be firmly tackled.The state government also admitted that indiscriminate use of polythene/plastic bags is a helth hazard .The govt said even though some measures were taken to restrict the use of polythene in different parts of the state,in the absence of specific law on the subject ban could not be implemented in the state.However, pursuant to the directions of the High Court in the case of SR Institute v/s state and others, govt has issued order no 452 fst/2006 dated 4-9-2006 by virtue of which use and entry of polythene bags particularly of less than 20 microns thickness at certain tourist place, hospitals and gardens around Dal Lake has been banned.
