Beig tears into the Abdullahs, demands inquiry against them | NC Response | | Neha Jammu, Mar 23: Denying allegations of corruption again him on Wednesday, former Deputy Chief Minister and PDP MLA Muzzaffar Hussain Beig blasted the Abdullah dynasty. He not only exposed the late Sheikh Abdullah but also lambasted NC president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He urged the Union Government to institute a high-powered inquiry commission to look into the charges of corruption levelled against him by the NC leadership and made a commitment that "if it's proven that I got some property from Governor Jagmohan, I will kick politics and I will voluntarily blacken my face and walk on the streets of Srinagar". At the same time, he demanded that the same inquiry commission should investigate as to from where the Abdullah family got all this property. "The centre should find out from where the Abdullahs raised assets worth crores as the father of Farooq Abdullah and former Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah was simply a teacher," he said. The attack of Beig on Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah was very scathing. He reportedly said: "I never wanted to say anything about Sheikh Abdullah, but it is the NC leadership which has forced me to dig history and set the record straight. People say Sheikh Abdullah freed Kashmiris from the cruel Dogras. The Sheikh propagated that the entire Dogra community was cruel and barbarous. It was this vilification campaign which created a wide gulf between the Muslims of Kashmir and Dogras of Jammu. Sheikh Abdullah was never a leader of the people of Jammu and Ladakh. Initially the Sheikh supported the idea of the state acceding to India, but turned against India when he found that the Government of India was not allowing him to establish his Sheikhdom. He created anti-India feelings in Kashmir by founding Plebiscite Front and playing communal politics. He communalised everything in Kashmir. Two generations in Kashmir suffered because Sheikh Abdullah poisoned the brains of Kashmiris and the evil effect of what he did is still visible in the Valley. To run his Plebiscite Front Sheikh Abdullah and his friends entered into a secret pact with Pakistan, got political and financial support and introduced politics of loot or financial corruption in the state. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto had issued a white paper on the money the Plebiscite Front got from Pakistan and the white paper was based on the receipts released by the NC leaders. In 1972, the Sheikh discarded his ideology and displayed political opportunism. He changed his stand believing that Pakistan had become weak, and hence, of no use in his struggle against India. Besides, he was also unhappy with Bhutto because the latter had issued a white paper. Earlier in 1965, Sheikh Abdullah had visited Mecca for Haj where he held a secret meeting with the Chinese President whom India had termed as its enemy. He was arrested when he returned to India on the ground that he hobnobbed with the Indian enemy in Mecca. After his release from jail Sheikh Abdullah became Chief Minister under an agreement reached with Indira Gandhi. There was not a single NC MLA that time in the assembly. He backstabbed the Congress by causing defection in the Congress party. 12 to 14 Congress MLAs defected and joined his camp. This was the first instance of its kind not only in Jammu and Kashmir but in the entire country. It was with this defection that the politics of Aya Ram and gaya Ram engulfed various parts of the country. Sheikh Abdullah had laid down a condition in the Delhi Agreement that Jammu and Kashmir would be kept outside the purview of fundamental rights as enshrined in the Indian Constitution, but in 1981-1982, he suggested abrogation of Article 370 saying it is not a verse of Quran. Dr Farooq Abdullah, along with Amanullah Khan, was the founder member of JKLF and he participated in a number of anti-India rallies in Pakistan. He was also part of the Pakistani delegation to the United Nations. Omar Abdullah tendered an apology in Pakistan for the role his grandfather played. Omar Abdullah must inform the public if he tendered an apology in Pakistan for the Sheikh's support to the decision of the Maharaja to accede to India". There was nothing new in what Beig said. Student of political history already knew what he said, hence, not very important. However, what was important was the fact that it was a distinguished Kashmiri politician and well-know lawyer who reflected on the credentials of the Abdullahs and their additivities. It was expected that the NC would retaliate and rebut Muzzaffar Beig, but it has not happened. On the contrary, the NC spokesperson on Thursday simply said that "Beig suffers from psychological disorder and gets into spells of unstable behaviour" and that the "party of the standing of NC feels it fit to take no notice of what he (Beig) has said". That the NC spokesperson did not rebut Muzzaffar Beig even once in his statement and that he simply talked about the psychology or otherwise of the former Deputy Chief Minister should clinch the whole issue and establish who was right and who was wrong. |
