March 23, 1987: The day that changed Jammu Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 23: March 23 is an important date in Jammu Kashmir history. This day changed the state for good. On this day 25 years ago democracy was slaughtered in Valley streets by Congress-National Conference alliance. It was not the Muslim United Front (MUF) that lost. It was democracy that died down on that day. The consequences are quite visible. This was perhaps the first time when Kashmiris willingly participated in the electoral process. And, on this day it dawned on them that ballot had miserably failed to get them their rights. What happened on that day has been condemned by the incumbent Governor of the state besides former Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee. The Assembly elections were held on March 23 in 1987. People, by and large, believe the `rigged elections' opened a new chapter in Kashmir history. Twenty-five years down the line, a question haunts the saner elements in the state. Had Muslim United Front (MUF) formed the government, what would have the amalgam done? Political experts have firm belief that Syed Salah-ud-Din would not be Hizbul Mujahideen Chief today had he been allowed to enter the Legislative Assembly. They also believe that Malik Muhammad Yasin and his associates would not have gone to Pakistan to seek arms training had their candidate, Syed Sala-ud-Din who had actually won the election been allowed to play a legislator. There is no denying the fact that most of the leaders of the MUF had separatist tendencies. But after taking over the government they would have ruthlessly crushed the "anti-national" elements like other governments. Power goes to the politicians head. When Sher-e-Kashmir assumed office of the emergency administrator in 1947, he got some of his staunch supporters arrested. Noor Muhammad Sofi, a baker from Koker Bazar area whose mere presence would scare Sheikh's opponents had to spend around three months in jail during his beloved leader's rule. He had dared to seek an explanation from his leader. Some others met a similar fate. Similarly the MUF would have chained its supporters including Yasin Malik and Sheikh Abdul Hamid to uphold `national interests'. What a mistake New Delhi committed! |
