Woman sentenced for attempting to kill stepson | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Mar 24: Additional sessions judge, Udhampur, M K Sharma today
convicted and sentenced Leela Devi for attempting to killing her stepson. The court awarded her one month imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500. She was
facing trial for the past six years. Convicting her, the judge remarked that in folklores too, stepmothers were
portrayed as evil and self-centered. There were standard personality traits
these women possessed. Sparked by the jealousy they often mistreated or
plotted against their stepchildren. Their schemes usually failed, and as a
result they were punished by the time the story concluded. This too was a
unique case where a stepmother attempted to kill her stepson, was caught
and made to stand trial, he observed. The complaint against Leela was lodged by her husband Nasib Chand. Ajay
Sadhotra is his son from first marriage. From her second marriage with Leela, he has three children. He, however,
claimed that the woman had two children from him, while the third was
illegitimately born. It was alleged that on June 7, 2005, Leela told Nasib that she was going to
her aunt's house in Jammu along with the kids. However, on June 8, 2005,
she took her stepson towards Devak nallah while he was returning from
school and attempted to kill him by strangulating him with her dupatta. The boy fell unconscious and was shifted to hospital by one Shadi Lal.
After Nasib came to know about the incident, he reached hospital. When Ajay
regained consciousness, he narrated the incident to his father who then
lodged a written report with Udhampur police station against his second
wife. After the judge delivered his judgement, the accused, who was present in
the court, was sent to district jail, Udhampur.
