Jammu to host 20th Senior, 11th Sub Junior National Wushu Championships

JAMMU, Mar 25: The Jammu and Kashmir Wushu Association shall hold 20th Senior and 11th Sub Junior National Wushu Championships from March 27 to March 31 at Jammu. Over 1500 participants including officials drawn from 38 affiliate units shall be taking part in this sporting extravaganza including the teams from CRPF, ITBP, SSB, Air Force, Services and Assam Riffles.
This was disclosed by Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports, Sh R S Chib while talking to media persons at PWD Guest House, Gandhi Nagar, here today.
The Sports Minister said that the organizers-Jammu and Kashmir Wushu Association in collaboration with J&K State Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports, has made almost all arrangements for smooth and successful conduct of the championship, adding that various committees have been framed to conduct the championships in a befitting manner. The committees included Control Room, Reception Committee, Ceremonies Committee, Technical Committee, Transport Committee, Medical Committee, Boarding and Lodging Committee and Press and Publicity Committee.
Chib further said that the participating contingents shall be lodged at Vaishnavi Dham and Saraswati Dham near Railway Station, Jammu.
"The Opening Ceremony shall be held on March 27 at 5 pm at MA Stadium, while the Closing Ceremony shall be held on March 30 at the same venue. The matches shall be played on four venues within the premises of Indoor Complex namely Indoor Hall, Judo Hall, Table Tennis Hall and Skating Rink," informed the Sports Minister.
RS Chib also briefed about the background of Wushu at the state, national and international scene.
He said that Wushu has come into existence in J&K in 1993 and has been recognized by J&K State Sports Council in the year 2000 and also covered under SRO 349 in the same year.
He said since its inception in the state this sports discipline has brought laurels to the state at national and international scene.
The Minister, further said that J&K has the honour of holding the High Altitude Wushu Camp at Gulmarg, under the banner of Sports Authority of India (SAI) recently.
Lavishly praising the son of the soil, Kuldeep Handoo, 11 times National Champion and 6 times International Medalist for his landmark achievements, the minister said that it was under Handoo's supervision that India got four medals including 2 silver and 2 bronze in 11th World Wushu Championship at Turkey recently, adding that India was ranked 4th in the world in the said championship.
The minister also said that Wushu was among 15 priority games in India and participating in this discipline of sport is an honour for all the players.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were HK Lohia, IGP Traffic and President J&K Wushu Association, Jaipal Singh, Director Youth Services and Sports, Kiran Wattal, Secretary State Sports Council, Ranjeet Kalra, Vice-President J&K Wushu Association, MS Baba, Chief Sports Officer Council, Vijay Saraf, Shivender Nath Dubey, Abhishek Jain and Kuldeep Handoo, General Secretary J&K Wushu Association
