Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 25 : Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a probe into the alleged multi-crore rupees temple land scam in the Kashmir valley.
Official sources said Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, has constituted a committee to conduct investigation into the allegation that acres of prime land belonging to Mahavir temple in Srinagar has been sold.
He said if the allegations are found correct, those involved would be punished as per law of the land.
It was alleged that properties of the erstwhile Dogra dynasty are gradually slipping into the hands of an organised land mafia working in the Kashmir valley that includes temple trusts, revenue and judicial officials.
The Kashmiri Pandit Sangarh Samiti (KPSS) and other pandit organisations have demanded a bill to protect temples and other property left in the Kashmir valley. KPSS president Sanjay Kumar Tickoo alleged that some elements from the community along with revenue officials were indulging in selling temples and other immovable property of pandit community.
He alleged as per details available with the Samiti, about 150 illegal sales of temple land and other property were done with the help of local politicians, revenue officials and other individuals.
Tickoo said, "We have been writing to Prime Minister, Union ministers, chief minister and others without getting any proper response."
On the one hand, the Centre and state governments are making tall claims that they are trying to make atmosphere conducive for return of Kashmiri pandits, but on the ground, the situation is totally different, he alleged and said temple land and other property were being sold.
He said despite repeated assurance, bill to protect temples and other property, has not been introduced in the assembly. "We want that the bill should be passed to put a halt on sale of our temples, he said. Tickoo said all previous selling of properties should be probed by Central Bureau Investigation (CBI).
