National level conference on "transforming teacher education' concludes at MIER

JAMMU, Mar 26 - Two day UGC sponsored National Conference on "Transforming Teacher Education: Issues, Practices and Assessment" concluded at MIER College of Education which was inaugurated by Abdul Gani Malik, Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment, J&K State on the other day. About 100 participants drawn from J&K, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and other states of India participated in the conference which was distributed into six technical sessions. The seminar aimed at providing a forum for interchange of knowledge, experience, concerns and innovations which are necessary to transform teacher education in India for the 21st Century.
The chief guest for the valedictory session was Prof. R. G. Kothari, Former V.C. Vir Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat and presently Dean, Faculty of Education & Psychology, M. S. University of Baroda, Vadodara. Dr. Arun K. Gupta, Chairman MIER was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion chief guest Prof. Kothari remarked that the conference has been useful in providing a platform to the educationists from different parts of the country to discuss the pertinent issues related to teacher education. He emphasized that research is necessary in transforming any system and teacher education is no exception.
'Research, he said, is meant to generate knowledge, to solve the problems and to establish relationship between various variables. He congratulated the organizers for conducting the conference on a relevant issue. The participants were also invited to share their views about the conference. Dr. Jagdeep from Kashmir University and Dr. Rakesh Tomar from NCERT, Ajmer presented their views and said that much was discussed during these two days and they learned a lot from the conference. They appreciated the way in which the event was organized & managed.
About 60 papers were presented during the sessions which dealt with various themes namely, 'Current scenario of teacher education in the country', 'Specific areas of teacher education which need modification and intervention', 'Practices and techniques to improve quality of teacher education', 'Use of ICT to transform teacher education system', 'Quality assurance in teacher education' and 'Innovations and research in teacher education'. Dr Lokesh Kaul, Prof. Emeritus and former Dean Faculty of Education, H.P. University: Prof. M.L. Kaul, Former Director, School of Education, IGNOU; presented keynote addresses. Besides Dr Meenakshi
Kilam, Director Distance Education, University of Jammu; Dr. Amit Kauts, Dean Faculty of Education, GNDU, Amritsar; Dr. Saif-ullah Khan, Chairman, IMMCT, Muzaffarpur; Prof. Subhash Gakhar, Former Head and Dean Dept. of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh; Prof. B.L. Raina, HOD P.G. Dept., MIER College of Education and Prof. H.R.Shan, Head, Centre for Educational Research, MIER College of Education chaired the different sessions as per the themes. Dr Renu Gupta, Director MIER, welcomed the guests and esteemed dignitaries, the keynote speakers, resource persons, paper presenters and educationists from different parts of the country. Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER presented the formal vote of thanks He thanked various dignitaries, keynote speakers & resource persons for enlightening the audience.
