Kashmiri Civil Society Forays Into Municipal Polls | | | early times report Srinagar, Mar 26: Civil society activists in Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district have decided to field their own candidates in the forthcoming municipal polls. The activists today formed Awami Mahaz (People's Front) comprising intellectuals, academicians, social activists, senior citizens and trade union leaders. Advocate Nazir Ahmad Malik, a senior High Court lawyer, has been elected as the chairman of the Mahaz, while prominent trade union leader Mohammad Yousuf Parra has been elected as its secretary. Malik said that Mahaz would field candidates in all the 17 municipal wards in the upcoming Municipal elections. "Mahaz has nothing to do with political parties. We are not against anyone. We are for our people. Our main objective is development of the town and mitigation of the problems being faced by Bandipora residents," he said. Syed Bashir Masoodi, an academician, said, "It is very unfortunate that Bandipora, despite its historical importance, has been neglected by the political leaders. Our political representatives have betrayed us. There is no development in the town. Unemployment is taking toll of our educated youth."
