Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, Mar 26: Even as chief minister Omar Abdullah and Hurriyat's Syed Ali Shah Geelani are ideologically poles apart, the former was quick in terming ABVP activists who here today heckled the separatist leader as "bloody idiots".
His was perhaps the first political reaction over the incident. He tweeted on the micro-blogging site Twitter: "These BSKS and ABVP goons are bloody idiots. Anyone can assault an old man. As if attacking SASG (Syed Ali Shah Geelani) will make the Kashmir issue just disappear."
Talking to a news agency in J&K, minister of state for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani also condemned the ABVP attack on Geelani. "He is an old man and attack on such a person is against humanity. Such attacks are intolerable," he said.
The Hurriyat leader, who was in the national capital, was heckled by ABVP activists during a function.
The agitators raised slogans against him and pulled off his cap, official sources said.
He was, however, saved by woman journalist Madhu Kishtwar. She saved him from more humiliation when he was being heckled by the ABVP workers.
This was, however, not the first time when Geelani faced such humiliation in the national capital.
Kashmiri Pandits in 2010 had hurled a shoe on him and created ruckus at the convention on "Azaadi, the only Way," which was being attended by a number of sympathisers of Kashmiri separatists and naxals.
According to Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar, Geelani was to interact with Delhi University scholars when he was heckled.
The function was organized by Center for Developing of Societies at its Civil Lines office here.
Waving flags, the protesters, who were later removed by police, shouted "Go back" and threw some pamphlets.
According to Ayaz, Geelani later said, "Those who don't have argument commit such type of actions. We do not want independence on the basis of religion, but Kashmir is an international issue."
