Jewelers continue their hunger strike | | | early times report JAMMU, Mar 26: Continuing with their ongoing agitation, the jewelers in Jammu sat on three-day hunger strike on Monday in protest against hiked tax in gold related business in the Budget. Amid anti-government slogans, the jewelers this afternoon under the banner of 'Jammu and Kashmir Swarnkar Sangh' (Jewelers Association) demonstrated at Chowk Chabutra against hike in tax on manufacturing, selling, purchasing of gold items. 'Despite week-long agitation, no assurance has been given to jewelers community by the government. We were forced to sit on hunger strike,' one of the members of Swankar Sangh said. He said, 'the jewelers are already facing crisis and the Central Government instead of relaxing them, hiked tax in the recently announced Budget.' The government should take immediate steps to relax the jewelers. The jewelers are observing complete shut down on a call given by the All India Sarafa Association in protest against the Central Government's decision to impose excise duty of one per cent on unbranded jeweler and four per cent import duty on gold. |
