J&K's higher education budget up by 3-times | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 27 : The budgetary allocation for Higher Education in Jammu and Kashmir has increased three fold during the last three years. From Rs. 26 crore in 2008-09, it has crossed Rs. 200 crores for 2011-12. This was disclosed by the Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik while replying to the discussion on the working of his department in the Legislative Council today. Minister said that during the past seven years there has been a boom of expansion in Higher Education in the State. He said there are presently 97 colleges, 11 women colleges, 5 universities and 258 private institutions in higher education working in the state. As such, he said, the gross enrollment ratio has shown a considerable increase. The Minister said a state advisory council on higher education has been constituted in the state with Chief Minister as its head to monitor the relevance and consolidation of higher education in the state. To boost academic interaction in the state, he said, 10 international conferences and 77 national conferences were held in the state while as 16 MoUs were signed with various academic institutions outside like AMU, JNU, Jamia Milia etc to further strengthen the academic base. He said one Professor from the state has been selected for the NASA deputation as well. Malik said all the colleges set up across the state have been provided with a sanctioned staff for which recruitments are on. He said the government has also approved 1200 posts of Assistant Professors (APs) to augment the faculty at college level. He said the UGC has made Rs. 117 crore and Rs. 85 crore available to Jammu and Kashmir Universities for the development of their campuses. The Minister informed that the two oldest colleges in Jammu and Srinagar cities have been chosen as lead colleges for Jammu and Kashmir provinces for which admissions would be held through written examination. The idea, he said, is to develop these heritage colleges as model institutions. |
