Chib declares 20th Senior, 11th Sub Junior | National Wushu Championships Open | | early times report JAMMU, Mar 27: Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports, Er R S Chib inpresence of Minister for Agriculture, Mr Ghulam Hasan Mir declared the 20thSenior and 11th Sub Junior National Wushu Championships open in an impre ssive, well attended and colourful function at MA Stadium, here today. Sports Minister, the chief guest on the occasion was accompanied by a galaxy of dignitaries including ministers, police officers andmembers of sports fraternity. Addressing a huge gathering of participating contingents, Chib lavished praise for the organizers in holding this sporting extravaganza,which is the first of its kind in the state of Jammu and Kashmir as for as the participation of the teams in this twin championship is concerned. "Wushu has the distinction of being a priority sport among15 premier sports disciplines in the country, hence these championships provide a great opportunity for the participants to showcase their skill and talent inthis prestigious sport," the Sports Minister opined. He said that such events apart from promoting sports and games in the state, go a long way in enhancing peace and harmony in the state through the messengers of peace (sportspersons), adding that the championships apart from helping budding athletes to hone their skills, will have a great opportunity in making friends from other states and learn about their culture and tradition. Appreciating the Omar Abdullah led state govern-ment's commitment in promoting sports and games in the state, Chib said that the state hosted 10 national level sports events in the current season. He said that over 1500 boys and girls drawn from 38affiliate units are taking part in this mega event, which include the teams of CRPF, ITBP, SSB, Air Force, Services and Assam Rifles. Other participating teams included Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Chand-igarh, Delhi, Daman Diu, Dadar Nagar Haveli, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Him-achal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kara-nataka, Karala, Maha-rashtra, Manipur, Maghalaya, Mad-hya Pradesh, Miz-oram, Nagaland, Orissa, Pondi- cherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tri-pura, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttra-khand, West Bengal and J&K. The sports Minister also threw light on the arrangements made by the organizers with regard to smooth and successful conduct of the championship, said that the participating contingents have been lodged in Vashnavi Dham, Saraswati Dham, Amarnath Yatri Bhawan and Jammu University Guest House. Appreciating Kuldeep Handoo for his excellence in this sports discipline at the International and National scene, Chib briefed about the achievements of Wushu at the International level. " Since 2006 onwards, Wushu has blossomed at the International scene as India has won a bronze medal in Doha Asian Games, bagged one silver and one bronze in 16th Asian Games at Goung zhau and 4 medals in 11th World Wushu Championship at Turkey, which placed India 4th in World Ranking," informed Sports Minister. Speaking on the occasion Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hasan Mir congratulated the organizers for organizing such a beautiful event in Jammu. He said in past few years sports and allied activities remained aloof, however two premier sports bodies in the state, the State Sports Council and the Department of Youth Services and Sports provided sufficient infrastructure tothe sports persons to lure them towards sports activities. Mir further said that such events help in building relationship with other states. Earlier, after National Athem, Introduction of Wushu and March Past, Mr H K Lohia, IGP Traffic, the organizing secretary of the event presented welcome address, which was followed by the cultural items presented in Kash-miri, Dogri and Ladakhi which enthralled the audience. Thenthe championship was formally opened by releasing balloons, followed by Wushu demonstrated by the experts of the trade. Prominent among others present onthe occasion were IGP Jammu, Dilbag Singh, Director Youth Services and Sports, Jaipal Singh, Secretary State Sports Council, Kiran Wattal. Joint Director DYSS, Madan Lal, Sidh-arth Sharma, Kuldip Man-gotra, Ashutosh Sharma, S. S Bali, Ashok Kumar, Romesh Mahajan, MS Baba, Rajan Sharma, Tirath Ram, besides the office bearers of the association including Ranjeet Kalra, vice - president Wushu Association of J&K, Vijay Saraf, Shiv-ender Nath Dubey, Deepak Handa, Farooq Amin, She-ikh Imran and Kuldeep Han-doo, General Secretary Jammu and Kashmir Wushu Association.
