Geelani not a problem, problem lies somewhere else | Delhi Attack | | Rustam JAMMU, Mar 27: Who says Syed Ali Shah Geelani is a problem? Geelani, who was again attacked in Delhi yesterday by the activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena (BSKS) for his anti-India stand or for his right to self-determination demand, is not a problem. He can be tackled in no time. He is surviving and thriving simply because the authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir have abdicated their authority and allowed the likes of Geelani to muddy waters not only in Kashmir Valley but also in the national capital, Delhi. The problem is not Geelani. The problem lies somewhere else. Take, for example, the response the attack on Geelani evoked from the authorities in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. The authorities in New Delhi, instead of booking Geelani and putting him behind bars on the charge of sedition, arrested the activists of the ABVP and the BSKS and allowed Geelani to spew venom on India. The police removed the activists of the ABVP and the BSKS who tried to attack Geelani and disrupt the event waving national flag, and shouting slogans "go back" and throwing pamphlets. Geelani interacted with the so-called scholars of Delhi University at the function organized by the Center for Study of Developing of Societies (CSDS) at its Civil Lines office where "30 scholars of Delhi University" were also present. It is obvious that it was Madhu Kishwar, member of the Kashmir Committee of BJP leader Ram Jethmalani, who organised the anti-India event. The authorities in New Delhi had acted the same way in the past as well. Had any Pakistani or Chinese organised anti-Pakistan in his/her country, he/she would have been liquidated in no time. It is Delhi which, instead of taking action against the rebels and secessionists, promotes them by allowing them unbridled freedom to preach sedition under the garb of right to free speech. What about Jammu and Kashmir? The attempted attack evoked widespread condemnation in Kashmir. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is duty bound to defend the constitution and territorial integrity of India and who holds the home portfolio, while condemning the attack on Geelani tweeted: "These BSKS & ABVP goons are bloody idiots. Anyone can assault an old man. As if attacking SASG (Syed Ali Shah Geelani) will make the Kashmir issue just disappear." What did his tweet suggest? His tweet suggested three things. One, he considers integrations as "goons and bloody idiots". Two, he doesn't attach any importance whatsoever to the oath he took at the time of taking over as the State Chief Minister. Three, he, like Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists, considers Jammu and Kashmir a dispute territory whose political future has yet to be determined in accordance with the wishes of the people of Kashmir. Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, also did not lag behind. Condemning the attempted attack, Wani said: "He (Geelani) is an old man and attack on such a person is against humanity. Such attacks are intolerable". He, like the Chief Minister, did not disapprove of what Geelani had been striving to achieve since decades. A number of other Kashmir-based political groups also reacted very sharply to what was done by the activists of the ABVP and the BSKS, but that deserves no comment because they are not part of the state government. This, notwithstanding the fact that some of the leaders of these political groups said that the "right to express one's views is a fundamental right in democracy and any attempt to curb it through illegal and strong arm methods is fascist and undemocratic"; that "in a democratic system everyone has the right to express his/her views on all issues in a peaceful, civilised and democratic manner" and that the "intolerance shown by the attackers was against the spirit of the democracy and civilised society". Suffice it to say that they simply expressed solidarity with the Chief Minister and his Deputy. So this is the situation. Those charged with the responsibility of protecting and promoting further the paramount national interests are defending the secessionists and taking action against the integrationists or those seeking to discharge the functions the institution of the state discharges. They are the real problem. This is the way the world ends. It's a horrible situation. It's depressing. It's no wonder that some highly disgusted and disappointed Indians have started saying that it is a sin to be an Indian. |
