Enhancement in retirement age, waiting for what? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 27: Both the state government employees' unions including the JCC and the EJAC have threatened stir if the State government does not decide soon on the enhancement in retirement age in respect of its employees. The committee set up by the State government to make recommendations on the issue has hardly met ever since it was constituted under the chairmanship of the State Chief Secretary, Madhav Lal. The response of the State government appears to be completely lukewarm on this issue and it simply indicates the non-seriousness with which the State government addresses issues till they come to a boil. State government employees have their duties and rights and both these must be respected by them. Every government employee howsoever high or low him/she might be in the administrative hierarchy is fundamentally a public servant employed in the service of the common man. The Chief Minister and the Ministers who are elected by the people have even deeper obligations towards the general public. Nothing can be and must be done that results in or causes avoidable inconvenience to the common man whose back is already broken by price rise, corruption, lack of redressal of demands and other such issues those concern our daily lives. So far as the demand by the state government employees concerning enhancement in their superannuation age is concerned, it is a just demand which cannot be wished away for long unless the state government wants to bring upon itself another crisis of sorts. There is no issue sitting on prestige with regard to this demand either by the Finance Minister or anybody else. Whatever is in the best interests of the public must be done and done quickly. As the demand of the employees is a just one, the state government should not waste further time testing the patience of its employees. It would be in everybody's interest if the announcement is made before the beginning of the new financial year or latest by the beginning of the new fiscal. The State government would have earned itself a lot of goodwill from its workforce by doing it in time and as a matter of routine. If the decision is delayed till the employees launch another agitation than the State government would be acting under pressure by doing something it should have done in routine. |
