Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 28: Notwithstanding he being the chief minister of troubled state, Omar Abdullah now takes to ignite separatist feelings in the Kashmiris by opening supporting hardliner separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani after latter was heckled and roughed up by some members of Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena Group headed by Tejinder Singh Bhagga on Monday when he was speaking at a Conference organized by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi.
The political analysts here believe that chief minister Omar want to appease the separatist camp to see his tenure peaceful in the coming months. The "insecure" CM does everything to keep Geelani in good humour, the analysts say. With all this and his utterances in the state assembly two years ago about Kashmir's relation with Indian union , the separatist camp including Syed geelani still doubt the credentials of the sheikh family and consider the family more nationalists than anybody else in the country.
Chairman of faction of Hurriyat Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday was heckled and roughed up by some members of Self-styled Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena Group headed by Tejinder Singh Bhagga when he was speaking at a Conference organized by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi. Chief Minter Omar Abdullah while registering his protest against the attack said in his tweet: "These BSKS & ABVP goons are bloody idiots. Anyone can assault an old man. As if attacking Syed Ali Shah Geelani will make the Kashmir issue just disappear."
Omar Abdullah feel that 2010 summer unrest was directly linked to Geelani's politics. The agitation left more than 100 people dead and shook the roots of the Omar government . CM Omar however, quelled the mass agitation with the help of Syed Geelani after he told his close confident and businessman friend to meet Syed Geelani in a tourist hut at Cheshmashahi in Srinagar. The business man friend of the chief minister begged to Geelani to help Omar to have smooth sailing in the state.
Geelani thereafter, announced that the stone pelting should be stopped as it was against the spirit of the "freedom movement." Importantly, Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on March 20 , 2012 asked people to boycott the local bodies' polls to be held in coming months. Geelani said that he was kept under house arrest continuously since last year.
Geelani said the local bodies' polls will have no credibility if he was not allowed to propagate his political agenda during coming elections. "I am being prevented to come out of my home since last year and my party workers and leaders are being kept in the jail," Geelani had said.
It is perhaps in this back ground that chief minister Omar Abdullah grabbed the opportunity to appease Geelani so that local bodies' elections be held peacefully that too in his party's favour, the political analysts maintain.
Anyway, Omar Abdullah's condemnation to the Geelani's attack had few takers in Kashmir while separatist camp including the Geelani supporters ignored the statement as another political gimmicks of the first family. Last but not the least, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wants to see the coming summer to pass off peacefully to attract more and more tourists to Jammu and Kashmir.
