Jammu, Mar 28: Former Deputy Chief Minister of the state and senior PDP leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig today offered to resign in the Legislative Assembly if the allegations leveled by senior NC leader Mir Saifullah against him were proved correct. The House witnessed heated argument between Beig and Saifullah after latter alleged that Beig was directly involved in transfer of land to the Amarnath shrine, which led to turmoil across the state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2008.
While participating in the discussion on grants of departments under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Saifullah taking a dig at PDP alleged that two ministers of PDP were directly responsible for the transfer of land, which had created law and order problem in the state. Baig who was present in the House reacted to 'provocative' expressions and subbed saifullah by promptly clarifying the accusations. Clarifying, Baig said he had not made any notings with regard to this issue nor was there any difference of opinion between the allies at that time. He said he had only given opinion for non-application of Supreme Court and Central Forest Act in the transfer of land to Railway which has been used as opinion for transfer of land in that case.
"I will resign from the House if charges are proved against me. ……The allegations by Saifullah are totally wrong and misleading. …………they tried to project that PDP was all against the sentiments of Hindus …………a picture was painted against the PDP for no reason….There was no transfer of land to Amarnath Shrine Trust, but land was specified for the smooth conduct of yatra to the cave shrine and facilitate the Yatries ", Beig said.
When Beig was clarifying the remarks made by Saifullah, he was interrupted by Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Ali Muhammad Sagar who said that then Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad was on record of having said that transfer of land was recommended by two ministers of PDP.
"Azad sahib said this in a press conference during which he had said that land was transferred to shrine", Sagar said.
This observation by NC minister provoked Beig further and he vehemently denied his involvement at any stage contending that Azad had referred to the issue of Railway land transfer and no land was transferred to anyone. "You provide the evidence and Speaker sir, I will resign from the Assembly", Beig said on assertive and angry note.
