Big achievement for security forces: IGP Kashmir | 5 LeT militants killed in Kupwara encounter | | early times report Srinagar, Mar 28 : Five Lashker-Toiba militants were killed in an encounter with troops of 21 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jammu and Kashmir Police in north Kashmir's frontier district of Kupwara on Wednesday. "Five foreign militants have been killed in an encounter in Handwara area," a defence spokesman said. Police sources told hat five LeT militants were holed up in the residential house of one Mohammad Iftikar Geelani. "As soon as the security forces cordoned off the area during the wee hours, three militants tried to escape from the cordon. However, the security forces in a swift action gunned down all of them in a nearby forest. Among the three slain militants, one was identified as Abu Bakar," they said and added that two more militants were killed inside the house as the security forces resorted to heavy mortar shelling. IGP Kashmir Range S M Sahai, who had rushed to Kupwara to supervise the encounter told reporters later that the slain militants were active in the area from the last few months. "It isn't a new infiltration. It was a joint operation of police, army and CRPF," he said. The IGP revealed that the group was being commanded by one Abu Bakar, a Pakistani militant. He termed it a big achievement for the security forces. Two of the slain militants have been identified by police sources as LeT commanders Abu Bakar and Ali Bahi. However, identity of the three others could not be ascertained as their bodies were charred completely due to heavy mortar shelling, they added. A police spokesperson in a statement said, " Acting on a specific information a joint team of Handwara Police, 21 RR and 92 Bn CRPF cordoned off Panjwani forests and village Laribal falling under the Police Post Zachaldara, Police station Handwara. The cordon and search operation ensued into an encounter in which three militants were killed in Panjwani forests and two militants were killed in Peer Mohalla Laribal." "The bodies of all the five militants have been recovered from the encounter sites. Five AK 47 rifles and 17 AK magazines were recovered from the slain militants. All the killed militants are believed to be affiliated with LeT outfit," he added. This was the first major encounter between security forces and militants in the Valley this year. |
