Srinagar records highest cross breed of sheep

Srinagar, Jan 24
The Sheep Husbandry sector plays an important role in boosting sub-urban and rural economy of Srinagar district. The district has the distinction of having highest cross bred percentage population of sheep in the state as out of 1.22 lakh sheep, 1.14 lakh have been upgraded and produced the finest wool in the state. The annual mutton and wool production is about 6.20 lakh Kg. and 2.36 lakh kg respectively. The department achieved second position in the Industrial Exhibition held at Srinagar recently. The department in order to minimize import of mutton is introducing Darbar breed.
The extension activities of department are being carried out through 35 Sheep Extension and six first aid centres. The vaccination and dosing targets for current fiscal year have already been achieved at the end of third quarter.
During the period, 1.46 lakh vaccinations have been performed, 2-13 lakh dosing administered besides 27,000 animals treated against various diseases.
