Govt. diverts ration from PDS to feed other areas | | | early times report JAMMU, Mar 29: With Central Government still not sending additional food grains to the Jammu and Kashmir to be distributed among the drought hit farmers in the state, government has been forced to divert the ration from Public Distri-bution System (PDS), creating shortage of ration in many areas. A official said that as the government had promised the people living in drought hit areas will get the free ration for six months, it was forced to divert it from the normal quota as the promised additional ration has so far not arrived. Officials said that under the plan, respective district administration was told to identify the people and areas hit by drought and render them assistance as per the scale announced by the state government. It is pertinent to mention here that State Government had admitted last year that during two years 2009 and 2010 40 per cent of Rabi crop (sown in winter) have been lost in Jammu region due to dry spell. Official data says that nearly 18 districts have been affected by the long dry spell both in the irrigated and non-irrigated areas, thereby affecting thousands of farmers in the state pushing the prices of essential commodities. Though officials from the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) deny that they are diverting the ration is reason for people not getting the ration on time, but sources said that in absence of the help from the center, administration is trying to reach out to the drought hit areas using minimum of the resources which are at its disposal. Minister for CAPD, Qamar Ali Akhoon said, "There are fixed number of families which have been identified as drought hit in every district which are getting the relief, but so far there has been no large scale diversion". Defending CAPD, he said that they have enough of the resources and food grains at its disposal to cover all the areas of the state. However on ground, people are complain that they are not getting ration on time and have to wait for days before the stores established by the government supply the necessary ration. "Were is the ration, we have to wait for days before it arrives", said Santosh Kumari, a local resident of Chinore, on outskirts of Jammu. Omar Abdullah led government had recently sent Rs 211 crore plan before the Central Govern-ment to provide relief to the affected people under Calamity Relief Fund (CRF), set up by the UPA government about two years back, but so far they have just got Rs 50 crore. Government with a view to provide immediate succor to the affected population had announced release of Rs 70 crore to be kept at the disposal of Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir and Jammu for providing free rations at the rate of 35 kgs per affected family till other measures are taken. |
