Continuous attempt by militants to infiltrate into Valley : Army
3/29/2012 11:24:28 PM
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Mar 29 : There were continuous attempts by militants to infiltrate from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir into the Kashmir Valley, and they want "to keep the pot boiling", a senior Army officer said.
"Infiltration attempts are going on continuously but so far there has been no contact with them along the Line of Control (LoC), hilly areas or in the snowbound areas," General officer Commanding of Army's 15 Corps Lt General S A Hasnain told reporters yesterday at Handwara in Kupwara district, 90 kms from here. The statement came in the wake of killing of five LeT militants yesterday by the Army in Kupwara district.
Lt Gen Hasnain was briefing the media about the counter-insurgency operation in Rajwar forests of the north Kashmir district yesterday, in which five Lashkar-e-Toiba militants, including a top self-styled commander were killed.
He said the success of the operation should not lead anyone to believe that there will be no infiltration attempts by militants to sneak into the Valley this summer.
"We have to remain alert and we are up to the challenge," he added. The Army commander said although there has been heavy snowfall in areas along the LoC, the handlers of militants on the other side start pushing as many militants as possible into the Valley at this time of year so that they have foot soldiers to carry out their designs. "They want to keep the pot boiling," he said.
Lt Gen Hasnain said the group of Lashkar militants, which was eliminated yesterday, was active for a long time and were being jointly tracked by Army and state police.
"This was an old group. It was being tracked and traced jointly by Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Army and has been eliminated now," the commander said.
Lt Gen Hasnain said the intelligence gathering for the operation was going on for the last one month. He lauded the security forces for carrying out a "professional and copybook" operation.
