Traders, shopkeepers call off strike in Bandipora
3/29/2012 11:25:45 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 29 : The Transporters and Traders of Bandipora township in North Kashmir today called off strike after they reached an agreement with the District Administration over the issue of traffic diversion in the town.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the roads for last 4 days as traders and shopkeepers were demanding one-way traffic through Bandipora market.
It may be mentioned here that last year the district administration had banned entry of public transport through the Bandipora market. This was done to avoid traffic jams and accidents in the market but it was affecting the business of the traders in the township. As per the agreement that was reached between the district Administration and the Civil Society of the township no public transport traffic will be allowed from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. through the Bandipora market during school and office hours. "One-way public transport traffic will be allowed to ply through the market for the rest of the day on trial basis for one week. After one week final decision about the traffic movement through market will be taken", the agreements reads. The decision was taken after a team of Civil Society led by Professor Mohammad Shafi, Haji Ghulam Hassan Mir, trader Union leader Mohammad Yusuf Parra, Abdul Majid Dar, Bilal Ahmad Dar, Haji Khalid Bhat and Iqbal Ahmad Dar met the Deputy Commissioner Bandipora, Mazoor Ahmad Lone, in presence of SP Bandipora this afternoon.
Traders and shopkeepers who had called this strike smelled that the political leaders of the district were trying to politicize the issue to get political capital out of it so they reached out at an agreement with the administration. They said that the political parties were issuing statements in the press to make political capital out of it people's concerns. Professor Mohammad Shafi, Haji Ghulam Hassan Mir and trader union leaders said that they will not allow any political leader to make political capital out people's problems. They said that these leaders have always exploited the sentiments of the people for their own political ends and have no concern for the welfare of the people and development of the district. Haji Khalid Bhat appreciated the role of DC Bandipora and assured full cooperation of the people to the district administration for the developmental activities of the district.
