Vigilance indicted agricultural scientist to head SKUAST J
3/29/2012 11:39:35 PM
Early Times Report
jammu, Mar 29: Even though the appointment of Dr. A.K. Srivastava, presently director National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal as the new vice chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences Jammu (SKUAST J) is in the final stage the controversial selection could cost the University heavily.
In a letter addressed to the Chancellor, N.N. Vohra (who is the head of SKUAST J) a faculty member of the University has alleged that "the person heading the search committee this time has already given three corrupt Vice Chancellors to the University and he is all set to give the fourth corrupt Vice Chancellor to SKUAST J this time unless the Chancellor exercises prudence".
Sources told Early Times the selection committee meeting has already been held wherein the name of Dr. Srivastava has been finalized. The Pro Chancellor of the University, Omar Abdullah has recently met the Chancellor where also as per the sources, the matter pertaining to the Vice Chancellor's selection came up for discussion among other things.
Sources also told Early Times that when corruption charges were leveled against a former Vice Chancellor, Dr. Nagindra Sharma during his tenure, it was basically Dr. A.K. Srivastava who was then Dean Post Graduate studies who had committed those irregularities.
The equipment purchased by Dr. A.K. Srivastava during his tenure as the Dean Post Graduate studies SKUAST J is still lying unutilized in the University. The equipment includes an electron microscope costing Rs. 1.50 crores, ultra centrifuge costing Rs. 50 lacs, High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) costing Rs. 25 lacs, Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectroscopy (GCMS) costing Rs. 30 lacs.
These purchases were made when Dr. Srivastava was the chairman of the works/purchase committee of the University wherein he also purchased electric poles worth Rs. 20 lacs some of which are yet to be erected inside the campus. He was also the chairman of the screening committee for various recruitments where huge irregularities had occurred.
Interestingly, Dr. Srivastava was indicted by the State Vigilance Organization (SVO) for this. The SVO approached the University with a request to sanction prosecution so that the accused could be turned over to the process of law. The University denied sanction for prosecution sought by the SVO thereby affording a blanket protection to the accused.
In light of these revelations strong discontent is brewing in the faculty and the students community of the University.
"God help us if the University is headed by a known corrupt Vice Chancellor", said a faculty member of SKUAST J.
