| HC allows Nimbus to market ODIs on DD | | |
NEW DELHI, JAN 24 The Delhi High Court today allowed Nimbus to market the India-West Indies cricket matches beamed on Doordarshan, holding that the private broadcaster was capable of generating higher advertisement revenues than the public broadcaster.
The order came on a petition filed by Nimbus -- the BCCI rights holder for covering cricket matches -- seeking permission to market the series on Doordarshan to whom it is providing feed albeit with a seven-minute delay.
Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul also directed Prasar Bharati, which administers Doordarshan, not to sell the feed received from Nimbus to any DTH satellite pay television provider.
Separately, Prasar Bharati approached the High Court bench comprising Chief Justice M K Sharma and Justice Sanjiv Khanna, seeking simultaneous telecast of the matches.
Its counsel pressed for an urgent hearing today, even as the second one-day match between the two countries was held, but the court fixed the matter for tomorrow.
A single judge bench of the High Court had yesterday passed an interim order directing Nimbus Communication Ltd to share feed with a delay of seven minutes as an interim arrangement to end the tussle between the two broadcasters, so as to not deprive millions of non-cable TV viewers of the cricketing action.
The public broadcaster, however, has challenged the single bench order, citing the government's up-linking guidelines that make it contingent on private broadcasters to share live feed of sporting events of national interest.
