Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 30: Authorities may be claiming of providing better health care facilities to the people in every nook and corner of the state but the poor health care facilities in the decades old hospital at world famous tourist destination of Pahalgam catering to more two dozen villages puncture the official claims.
Established by Maharaja Hari Singh, the allopathic dispensary in the town is yet to be upgraded as Primary health centre (PHC) or Sub-district hospital (SDH) despite the fact that the town besides being the favorite destination for lakhs of tourists every year is also the Tehsil headquarter.
"The people from at least 25 villages adjacent to Pahalgam who visit the hospital for treatment are bearing the brunt of the poor health care facilities in the dispensary. Due to the poor heath care here almost every patient is forced to visit sub-district hospital Seer or district hospital Anantnag," said a group of residents.
They said that for getting even some minor tests done or for a critical injury the patients are left with no option but to go to other hospitals.
A resident, Ghulam Nabi, said that the shortage of medical and Para-medical staff in the dispensary is further adding to the woes of the patients.
"It is irony that a single doctor is posted in the dispensary for the population of about 40000 people. Though there is post of a lady doctor but that is lying vacant for years," he said.
Another resident said that the hospital seems to have been established for the Amarnaath Piligrims only.
"During the yatra period additional staff , both medical and Para-medical is deputed to the hospital. There does not arise any need to refer any patient to other hospitals as the sufficient staff remains available during the entire Yatra period. But once the holy pilgrimage is over all the staff is taken back," said a resident.
The residents accused the politicians of keeping them in dark for years together. " The political stalwarts whom we approach for upgradation and raising of infrastructure of the dispensary have been telling that the dispensary has been upgraded to sub-district hospital but the mess continues there. It seems to have been upgraded only on papers," said the residents. A top official of the health department wishing anonymity said that they have not officialy recieved any information about the upgradation of the dispensary yet.
"The same may have been upgraded at political level but at administrative level it continues to be of same status," the official said.
