Ranbir canal faces neglect
3/30/2012 11:51:15 PM

JAMMU, Mar 30 : Once considered as a life line of the Jammu region, Ranbir canal, now stands testimony to the official apathy and rampant pollution. Every year before releasing the water in the canal, which is an offshoot of Chenab River, the state government takes an uphill task to de-silt it and remove pollutants from the bed of the canal.
However, this year it does not seem that the government is in a mood to clean the canal. People living near the bank of the canal express their sorrow that how this dumped garbage has created problems for them.
The people even rue that the government seems to be non-committed in cleaning the canal to restore it's past glory. Today, the scene at the places where the de-silting work is going on is a bit different, as the contractors have employed JCB machines and tractors to lift garbage and silt that have been dug from the canal but still there seems no initiative of the government in the cleaning process.
Parvati Dogra of canal road said," The project to de-silt the canal is just an eyewash, the contractors are busy removing the silt deposits in the canal."
"People in the far off villages use this water for drinking purpose, washing clothes and utensils. However, the canal is so much polluted that an epidemic can break anytime", she further added. "The canal is in such a plight that we are not in a position to go to any recreation places around the Ranbir canal. It has started emitting bad odour, which is not only harmful for us but also for the environment as a whole," said Vijay Gupta, another resident of canal road. Every year lakhs of tonnes of garbage is dumped inside the canal and the government spends crores of rupees to de-silt the canal. But, when the water gets released the garbage again flows into the fields and not only destroying the crops, but also making the land barren. The ultimate solution to the problem which can be taken up by the government is to tighten it's nose around the contractors, who have been dumping silt and garbage on the bed of Ranbir canal and ask them to remove all such toxic material before water flows in again into the canal.
