| No more “Rab ka Shukur Ada Kar” ….. | | Members demand doing away with old system | | Jammu, Jan 24 Cutting across party lines, Members in Legislative Assembly today demanded doing away with existing education system for replacing it with market oriented subjects. The members also cornered government for opening and upgrading schools and colleges without making available funds for the consolidation of infrastructure for these institutions. Participating in the discussion on demand for grants for education, Sharief –u-din Shariq said that government has failed to come up to the expectation of people so far as the improvement of education system is concerned. He said “no doubt there has been a great expansion of the education network but it was not backed by adequate infrastructure” adding that lack of required staff of infrastructure has hampered the desired results. Accusing government of ignoring Kupwara district, he alleged that the new schools were opened on ‘political bases’. Criticizing the existing system of education, he said there is an impending need for going by the dream of Mahatma Gandhi who wanted that along with academics students should be given vocational training so that they could develop an earning hand. Asserting that the present system of education is only producing an army of educated unemployed, he demanded for introducing job oriented courses and doing away with the old system. In his typical style, he said there should be no more cramming of Rab ka Shukur Ada Kar bhai… adding that the government has now take serious measures if it want the sate to compete with the rest of the world. Expressing similar views, M. Y Tarigami said that present system of education has become a means to create joblessness and demanded constitution of an Education Commission for framing a fresh education policy as per the present demands. He also took the government for task for opening new educational institutions without making prior arrangements of funds for infrastructure. Making a dig on government, he said despite having separate directors for two divisions the supervision is very poor adding that the government has also failed to check the reckless mushrooming of private schools. He said these institutions have become commercial centers. Attacking his own government Shayam Lal Sharma criticized the government for its failure to provide adequate staff in ruler areas adding that there are forty nine posts of teachers, lectures and others vacant in his constituency. Questioning government’s claims, he said “how could we expect any progress in the field of education when our schools are without teachers”. Alleging government of paying little attention to the development of art and Culture in rural area, Shayam Lal said “it seems that ‘Art and Culture’ has been restricted to the four walls of Cultural Academy as if have no such talent is present in rural areas” Others who participated in the discussion included Kanta Andhotra, Kaiser Jamshed Line, Mushtaq Bukhari, Raman Matoo, Majid Wani, Nazir Gurazi, Zahoor Mir, Kafeel-ul Rehman, Ashwani Kumar , Pintoo Narboo and Sajad Kitchloo
