| Rs 8300 cr plan for development of cities, towns: Qazi | | Dal rehabilitation project at Rs 191 cr on annual | | JAMMU, JANUARY 24 Minister for Housing, Urban Development and Forests Qazi Mohammad Afzal said in LA today that in order to rehabilitate Dal dwellers over 7500 kanals of land at Rakhe Arth have been transferred to LAWDA. He said under the 1st phase 3300 kanals are being developed and rehabilitation work launched at a cost of Rs. 191 crore for the purpose. He said till now 1230 families have been shifted from Dal area and rehabilitated at 8 colonies. Replying discussion on grants for departments under his ministry, he said that government has put up a proposal to the Central government requesting another package of 323 crore for Dal development which he said has been principally agreed to. Qazi Afzal said various measures have been set in place for development and beautification of cities and towns of the state. He said two cities of Srinagar and Jammu have been brought under the ambit of JNNURM for all round development of all sectors. He said a comprehensive development plan costing more than Rs. 8300 crore has been formulated to address the needs of towns and Srinagar and Jammu cities and make the duo capitals of the state as model cities. He said central government has approved funding for development of cities and towns @ 90 % grant and 10 % loan ratio. He said under CCDP, IDSMT and IDMT basic amenities providing schemes and expansion of civic facilities in 76 towns have been launched in the state to be implemented under phased programme. He said for the development of model town Charar-e-Sharief a project at a cost of Rs. 25.16 crore is in hand which is likely to be completed in next two years. He said various schemes including development of EWS colonies, development of slum areas, construction of deep drains, sewerage systems, VAMBAY and Indira Awas Yojana are being implemented besides self-employment generating programme of swarn jayanti sheri rozgar yojana in urban areas. Qazi said that with a view to restore the forest wealth and encourage afforestation on large scale over 80000 hectares of land is being brought under forest cover adding that 2000 hectares of forest land has been retrieved from the grabbers. He said that during last 3 years 112318 cft. of smuggled timber has been seized by the forest protection personnel. He said that Eco Task Force and Territorial Army to control the smuggling of green wealth and promote afforestation have been formulated in the state. He said that under Urban Forestry scheme the vacant land in towns and cities is being brought under afforestation, besides, social forestry programme is extended to the uncovered areas of the state. He said that under central funding River Valley Project is under implementation and so far Rs.2.67 crores have been released for it. Qazi said that a new forest policy is being formulated to preserve green wealth, restore Eco system, protect water bodies including Jhelum, Chenab, Wullar and Shivalika catchments.
