`Extension to retiring officials is an unpardonable sin' | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 31: Even as unemployment remains a major problem in the state, extension in the services of bureaucrats is perceived by the saner elements as an `unpardonable sin'. Normally a person, who appeases the government, a minister or an influential politician is blessed with extension. Or to put it plainly, a person who dances to the tune of his masters holds office even after his retirement. Extension in lieu of meritorious services is no problem. An honest officer who works for the welfare of the country and the people may be considered for extension. But, when it is given as a reward for a `mischief', the problem starts. Extension of some bureaucrats in Gujrat has been rightly contested and resented by the people. An in-depth study of their conduct reveals the motives behind their extension. It has been observed that such officers were either guilty of a heinous offence or caused miscarriage of justice to serve the petty interests of their bosses. Jammu Kashmir is a state where the government has been held liable of `trust deficit' and `governance deficit' by none other than the Union Home Minister. He was advised to reach the people to address the grievances of the people. Home Minister's statement conveys that the bureaucracy failed to do its job in this sensitive state. The government must, therefore, think twice before granting extension to retiring officials who failed the state and the people in difficult times. |
