Prof Gupta questions 'yardsticks': why ET was denied due for years…? | Distribution of govt ads to newspapers | | Early Times Report Jammu, Mar 31: During the ongoing Budget session of Legislature some legislators have been considerate enough towards the fourth estate in terms of government having deprived few newspapers of their rightful due in the distribution of advertisements to them. That Early Times newspaper has been a non beneficiary and remained so for years in the past until recently, is known to everyone which is why during the current session some legislators off and on raised the matter in the lower House. Only two days back veteran political leader Prof Chaman Lal Gupta voiced concern over the matter and specifically made a mention of Early Times English daily which was denied the government advertisements for reason or rhyme in comparison to other newspapers that are at par with it. It was during the question hour that Prof Chaman Lal Gupta raised the matter and observed that government was not adopting a fair policy which could reflect parity and transparency in so far as distribution of government advertisements to the newspapers I concerned. Prof Gupta while asking the criteria or the yardsticks government has fixed in giving ads also alleged that he had not been given proper answer in the question he had put up with respect to this issue during the current session. Prof Gupta while making his point alleged government was adopting discriminatory approach in this sphere too as ads were not being given to the papers which deserve and have entitlement in all respects whereas there are other newspapers where government has been generously giving ads just because such papers obliged the government in terms of giving image boost and wide coverage to the ministers , their activities and functioning of the government. In other words the government was generous to those organizations which are enjoying goodwill of the ministers or the government as a whole and state Information Department's role in this was not fair at all. The veteran politician has also sought detailed answer to his question and related queries in this regard through privilege move and the Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone responded the other day in an assuring way that he has already directed his Secretariat to seek further and elaborate details from the Information Department and he would provide it as soon as they come. It remains to be seen whether the Information Department provides such details in the current session or not. But Prof Gupta concluded his observation the other day with the remark that the government should take up seriously the matters that come up during the proceedings. |
