Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 1: 14-Day long annual drama festival, organised by J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, concluded on Sunday evening with staging of Dakghar - a Dogri adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's famed play 'The Post Office'.
Minister for tourism and culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora was the chief guest on the occasion. Other dignitaries who were also present on the occasion included former secretary Academy, Balwant Thakur and former acting secretary, TR. Sharma among others.
Praising the Academy for organising the drama festival the minister said that his ministry would encourage such initiatives. Laying
emphasis on revival of theatre activities in Kashmir valley the minister said that this would be explored. Dakghar, which was staged by Samooh theatre on the final day of the festival today, was translated into Dogri by Academy's senior drama instructor, Dr. Sudhir Mahajan. The play was directed by Ravinder Sharma.
Written by Rabindranath Tagore 'Dakghar' captures the yearning for freedom of the sick child Amal. The play is about mans passionate cry for spiritual freedom. It concerns Amal, a child confined to his adopted uncle's home by an incurable disease. Amal stands in Madhav's courtyard and talks to passers-by, and asks in particular about the places they go.
The construction of a new post office nearby prompts the imaginative Amal to fantasize about receiving a letter from the King or being his postman. The village headman mocks Amal, and pretends the illiterate child has received a letter from the king promising that his royal physician will come to attend him.
The physician really does come, with a herald to announce the imminent arrival of the king; Amal, however, falls asleep (or dies) as Sudha comes to bring him flowers.
The actors who enacted different scenes of the play on stage included Ravinder Sharma, Avinash Lakhnotra, Mukesh Bawa, Shubham Sharma, Vikram Khatri, Mridul Raj Anand, Harshita Jamwal, Aryan Jamwal, Manik Sharma, Kandarv Sharma, and Rohit Chib.
