| DPYS initiates "Save Tawi Campaign" | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 1: Duggar Pradesh Yuva Sangathan (DPYS), a social organization incorporated with the mission to spread awareness about environment and many other social activities, initiated a "Save Tawi Campaign" through which the volunteer made people aware about their social responsibilities by educating them about not to throw polybags in river while immersing "saakh" as they pollute the river.
Jammu city might be the only city in the whole of India which is associated with the name of river Tawi.
Raja Jumbo-Lochan laid the foundation of the city after having witnessed drinking of water by a Panther and a goat from the same Tawi River. Thus people of Jammu have got cultural, religion and social connections, attachment with this river, but their indifferent insensitive behaviour and life style has resulted in severe pollution and even survival of this river is in great jeopardy.
The river is being polluted by throwing of garbage, discharge of sewage, chemical effluents, open defecation, silt from degraded catchement, washing of vehicles etc. It has an adverse effect on fish, animals and wild animals and habitations using this water for drinking, agricultural or any other use.
The hard facts like population explosion, mismanagement in the disposal of sewerage water of the old city, throwing of polybags by locals and lack of awareness among the people have contributed a lot for spoiling clean and fresh Tawi water. The 'deliberate ignorance' on part of certain agencies and the attitude of escapism has further aggravated the problem.
This all movement was started through facebook page Redefining Jammu (RJ) (http://www.facebook.com/myjammu) in which many volunteers alongwith some dignitaries and social workers have joined.
Jammu Municipality Corporation has also extended their full hearted support by providing dustbins, mobile vans and some workers. Social Awareness camp was sponsored by SFMC PPR Pipes.
The members of Duggar Pradesh Yuva Sangathan, Redefining Jammu and WE Can along with some enthusiastic volunteers present there have pledged to make an effort to save Tawi on Ram Navami
Today on Navmi, the site of Tawi river was just appalling. The river had more polythene bags floating on it than water and this made volunteers to forge into the waters and start doing their bit to save Tawi
DPYS team with all zeal and good spirit went into the waters and started cleaning the river. In their minds there was only one thing and that Saving Jammu Saving India Saving Earth !!!! |
