Congress likely to support AFSPA repeal | Azad soothes Omar | | Asif Iqbal Naik
Jammu, Apr 2: Former Chief Minister and Union Health Minister exercised extreme caution while addressing a a function on Tawi banks yesterday where a statue of Maharaja Hari Singh was unveiled. He had some soothing words for Omar Abdullah and also remained mum on his demand for revocation of AFSPA. The Congress, it seems desperate to save the UPA government in New Delhi. The UP election results, political circles believe may have a serious bearing on the Congress led union government. The National Conference has four MPS who support the coalition. To keep them in good humour, Azad had some soothing words for Omar Abdullah. "He (Omar Abdullah) is the Chief Minister of the state for 6 years", he said while addressing the function. However, talking to news men later, he said coalition was compulsion. Azad also said that coalition `works on give and take'. This has been poerceived as a desperate act to ensuire support of NC MPs to the Congress led coalition at the centre. Azad also remained mum on Omar's demand for revocation of AFSPA. "I have made my mind not to speak over any political issue on the eve of today's function. I will take to you over the issue on any other occasion", he said. Azad's cautious approach reflected his concern for the Union government which is under pressure from its allies. The weak UPA government has been forced to change the railway minister after he hiked the railway fare. At this crucial juncture, Congress cannot affoird to annoy the National Conference which has 4 MP's. Congress support to Omar's demand for revocation of AFSPA, thetrefore, is almost certain. Omar Abdullah has already made cdlear that the issue will be taken up with the Union Home Minister during his visit to New Delhi. |
