Jammu | Jan 24
Power thefts in the city of temples continue especially in the areas where digital meters have been installed by the Power Development Department (PDD). “Hooking is widely followed across the areas where meters are installed. Most of the consumers in these areas adopt hooking as it means less pressure over their pockets and it is generally the line staff of the Power Development Department (PDD) who lieu of certain payment.
Curbing Power thefts in the city has been a challenging task for the government since decades together. Non seriousness of the department, in particular is said to be the main reason responsible apart from lack of public awareness regarding the Judicious use of Power.
Installing meters too has not put an end to this Crime. People in such areas use power illegally by adopting to hooking, due to which meters show no or less reading and accordingly they have to pay less dues than they continue.
“The question arises who commits the thefts ? It is not a common who is aware of such tactics. This is done by the line staff of PDD. Consumers pay them certain amount and get their work done and nobody objects. This is the system in which we are living. Expecting Miracles over night in such a situation is beyond imagination, “said Pankaj Sharma a resident of Trikuta Nagar.
Power Development Department, however has decided to come out strongly against the violators. Direct Inspections, Photography of hooking, reaching out to the people through print and electronic media and appealing them not to use illegal means, warning the line staff about dire consequences are the various tactics adopted by the department to put an end to the power theft. This was stated by Superintending Engineer PDD Jagjit Singh.
This is a crime that is initiated by the consumers by paying the line staff. His loyalty is purchased. When he has to be loyal to the department he doesnot because of certain payment, in cash or kind, “ he said. Chief Engineer PDD Jammu. D.S. Pawar said, “ we are taking action against those found guilty including the line staff. If the hooking system in any area is found during day time, action is taken against the line staff as well as consumers.”
