Insolence, humiliation instead of 'admiration' leaves sculpturist 'Jamwal' perturbed | Maharaja Hari Singh's statue unveiling | | Kunal Shrivatsa JAMMU, Apr 3: For an artist recognition to his or her art work is more than any reward but renowned sculptor Ravinder Jamwal, who made the life-size statue of Maharaja Hari Singh, was not fortunate enough to receive the attention for his creation as the former was not invited for the unveiling ceremony of the sculpture on April 1. If denial of invitation was not enough to feel 'humiliated', the eminent sculptor had to face more 'disgrace' during the unveiling ceremony as the organisers and leaders who spoke at the function did not even bother to mention a word of praise for his painstaking effort of about one year. Speaking to Early Times, the visibly upset Jamwal minced no words to vent his ire on the organisers of the show as well as the political leadership who completely ignored his work. "I failed to understand why the organisers did not invite me… I don't know the reasons for omitting my name from the list of invitees… This is not only upsetting but a humiliation for an artist," Jamwal said, adding that since the statue was scheduled to be unveiled on Sunday, I worked till Saturday midnight to give final touch to it, however, no one from the organisers' side asked him to attend the function. "Leave aside an invitation card even if the organisers had made a phone call requesting me to be present at the ceremony I would have definitely attended the grand occasion," Jamwal said The man behind creating masterpieces in the shape of sculptures of Lt General Bikram Singh, Brigadier Rajinder Singh, General Zorawar Singh and Mian Dido is also perturbed over the way he was ignored by the speakers at the ceremony as they did not utter a word of appreciation for his effort. "It was really painful that nobody took notice of my labour during the unveiling ceremony… I am really hurt when friends like Narayan Singh of Rajput Sabha failed to mention a word or give credit for my work," Jamwal said "Though I have made a number of figurines but Maharaja Saheb's statue is close to my heart and I think so far it is my best creation… For the past one year I was working day and night to make the statue and even I shelled out money worth Rs 1-1.5 lakh from my own pocket to complete the same as it was my dream to make a sculpture of Maharaja Hari Singh, however, disregard to my work is an agonizing experience," he added. Masters in Fine Arts from Vadodara (Gujarat), Jamwal said that after receiving so much of accolades including Rashtrapati Award, he doesn't desire honours anymore; however, appreciation for the work is least an artist craves for. "I received a number of phone calls in appreciation of Maharaja Saheb's statue which is more than an award for me…. It would have been really encouraging if the official recognition to my work was given…. I have been neglected by the authorities which clearly reflects that in our state artists are treated like contractors," Jamwal said. It is worthwhile to mention here that the statue of Maharaja was unveiled on April 1 by the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Member of Parliament (MP) Dr Karan Singh. |
