Respiratory ailments on rise around the plant

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 3 : The largest cement manufacturer in north India, J K cements, is turning out to be a health hazard for the people of nearly half-a-dozen villages of the saffron town, Pampore. The residents accuse the pollution controlboard of inaction. "Despite being the largest cement manufacturer in the country, the management of the plant seems to be least bothered about the health of the people living around it. The plant produces at least 40 trucks of cement in 24 hours but the management has so far failed to install a potentanti-polluting device," said the residents of Khrew village. At least a dozen villages, locals said, are affected by the pollution caused by the plant.
"Every morning one has to walk over a thick layer of the cement dust. An area stretched over 5 kilometers is covered with a blanket of white dust that emanates from the plant. The management for its monetary benefits has put the health of the people at risk,"said a resident Mohammad Akram.
The residents said that said that a huge chunk of population of the area is suffering from respiratory disorders due to the pollution caused by the plant. "In every affected village hundreds of people suffer from one or the other respiratory ailments including lung silicosis, chronic bronchitis, skin allergy or
tuberculosis (TB), said a health expert of the area.
The locals have repeatedly registered their protest without success. "We many a time observed strike against the plant management and PCB authorities for failing to check the pollution caused due to the cement factory but all in vain", said a resident.
He said that few months back when the issue was highlighted by the media some officials from the PCB visited the plant and directed the management to ensure that no pollution is caused.
"After being grilled by the PCB officials the plant management checked pollution to a large extent but the situation now is back to square one. Pertinent to mention , the PCB has the powers to close the plant if its management fails to abide by its norms.
