Azad's sermon to Congress loyalists
4/4/2012 12:08:28 AM
While dedicating Maharaja Hari Singh Park in Jammu to the
people on Sunday the Union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad, made a few remarks which indicated that he was not quite happy with the performance and work culture of the Congress ministers in Jammu and Kashmir. He had stated that Congress ministers would remain confined to their constituencies when they were supposed to move in and around different areas and far flung belts in the state. Yes, there have been a couple of Congress ministers who have been found quite active in their constituencies and have been avoiding visiting other areas in the state. But there was no need for Azad to comment on it publicly when, as a senior party leader, he could have discussed the matter with the party ministers. He did not do it. He preferred airing his views in public which confirmed that his ire was against the Congress ministers who belonged to the camp of loyalists headed by Saif-ud-Din Soz. Possibly Azad may have felt it below his dignity to disuss the issue with the ministers belonging to the Congress who, he feard, may not have followed or accepted his dictation.
Had Azad not been conscious of the groupism in the state unit of the Congress he could have, as union Minister and as senior leader of the Congress that shares powers with the National Conference, given this sermon to all the members of the council of ministers, headed by Omar Abdullah. This was needed because there are some ministers belonging the National Conference who too have been found spending more time in their constituencies than in other Assembly segments. He has not done so because he may not have been willing to cause any strain in his relations with the NC leadership. That he has been opposed to any demand for change in the guard in the state is evident from his repeated utterances favouring status quo.Azad gave vent to these feelings when he told people that the National Conference would continue to head the Government for full six-year term. Interestingly, for Azad reports on groupism in the state unit of the Congress are the outcome of media imagination. He has stated that there is no factionalism in the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir claiming that the party is united. May be he was encouraged to make such a claim after he saw three prominent Congress ministers, Raman Bhalla, R .S.Chib and Sham Lal Sharma, considered to be the loyalists, present in the function. Possibly Azad may not be knowing the compulsions on the part of Chib,Bhalla and Sharma, to be present in the function. Being Jammu centric with their vote bank in Jammu these ministers had to respect the sentiments of people of the region who continue to respect the last Dogra ruler, Maharaja Hari Singh and laud his services to the state. Azad may not have measured reasons that kept the NC leaders and valley based Congress leaders away from the function because this set of leaders did not ant to lose their vote bank when people in the valley have been taught to berate the Dogra ruler. There are people who wish to know whether it is up to Azad only, to decide whether the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir is a divided house or united. Anyway what irk some congressmen is the way Azad has been putting his weight behind Omar Abdullah which they think is against the interests of the Congress. However, these Congressmen do not know that by supporting Omar Azad wants to seal chances for Saif-ud-Din to get the Chief Minister's gaddi. By doing so Azad is trying to delay revival of Congress -PDP coalition rule.
