Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 3: An emotional expression of concern by the PDP MLA from Pattan, Maulana Iftkhar Hussain Ansari seeking immediate steps to stop attempts by land mafia to fill up traditional water bodies in Kashmir and sell them, echoed in the State Legislative Assembly and were rightfully resonated by Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone, but even as no tears were shed for them, many a famous water bodies of Jammu have been lost to greed, neglect and apathy.
The noted water bodies which have a place in the history of the city like Talab Tillo, Talab Khateekan, Rani Talab and Pucca Talab have been lost in the oblivion and while major portions of these water bodies were lost to insatiable gluttony of the land mafia, thanks to former Governor of the state Jagmohan who preserved their fossils in the form of community halls and parks.
These Talabs had a special place in the cultural journey of the city and the elderly recall their emotional bonding with the water bodies which not only conserved the ecological harmony but also the cultural harmony of the city as they served as play fields for the children and clubs where women and men used to converge and socialize. However, as the land prices in Jammu stated shooting up following exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the valley, land mafia eyed it as an opportunity to make fortunes and soon these ponds and their adjoining areas were usurped and encroached upon.
Greed and corruption in the Revenue department helped such mafia to realize their nefarious designs and soon these water bodies which once decorated city's landscape started shrinking to oblivion. Jagmohan who Governed the state at that point of time realized the need to conserve the left over parts of these traditional water bodies and got them converted into parks and community halls as they exist today.
It is a pity that after losing so many important water bodies, the city has not come alive to the need to save the remaining water bodies and they are also facing neglect of not only the government but also the people. The Pond at Paloura is one of the few water bodies in the city which is panting for breath. Once full and reverberating, it is shrinking thick and fast and the urban bodies have failed to take notice.
