Growing Sino-Pak military nexus a threat to US and India | | | When during his recent meeting with the Chinese Vice Premier,Li Keqiang,in Beijing Pakistan Prime Minister,Yousuf Raza Gilani, said that "China's friend is our friend and China's enemy is our enemy "the statement was pregnant with political significance. Was Gilani referring to the growing rift in Pak-US relations or the still unending mistrust between India and Pakistan? Whatever significance Gilani's statement has New Delhi and Washington need to be careful about the growing nexus between Islamabad and Beijing. In fact Gilani's main purpose for travelling to Beijing was to assure the Chinese leaders that Pakistan treated China as Pakistan's all-weather friend. In addition to this Gilani's purpose was to secure assurance from Beijing on its policy of providing military and non-military aid to Pakistan. One thing is certain that Pakistan is economy, its energy resources and other development activities besides those that are linked with its defence preparedness bank on liberal military and non-military aid from Washington and from Beijing. Fearing that Washington may continue to reduce the level of military and non-military aid to Pakistan because of some misgivings over the latter's role in the ongoing war against terror Gilani thought it better to seek assurance from Beijing as far as its willingness for providing added quantum of military and nonmilitary aid to Pakistan was concerned. China responded favourably. It had to do so after Islamabad has bartered away areas in the north to help China to build projects and establish military bases. Since Beijing has realised that Pakistan can help it in establishing its military bases in its northern areas which could help it in containing March of Islamic fundamentalists and extremists into its Xinxiang province and facilitate its task of keeping an eye on the US forces in Afghanistan and Afghan-Pakistan border. What is amazing is the way Gilani and Li Keqiang vowed to use the all weather friendship for protecting and safeguarding each others' territorial integrity and sovereignty when Pakistan has gifted vast tracks of its area to China. Political pundits read another meaning in Gilani's statement "China's friend is our friend and its enemy is our enemy "arguing that the Pakistan Prime Minister may have India in his mind while dishing out such views. These Pundits opine that Gilani could mean that any country that is not friendly to China can be Islamabad' s enemy thereby dropping a hint that if New Delhi does not mend its fences and resolve border issue with China India can then be an enemy of Pakistan.Since late seventies Pakistan has been trying to create scare for the Indian leadership by gloating about its nuclear and missile power. What seems to have lent military muscle to Pakistan is the liberal military assistance from Beijing and Washington. And over the years Washington has ignored the ill effects of its military aid to Pakistan because the quantum of aid has not been r educed even after New Delhi conveyed to the US Government that a major portion of the US weapons and ammunition had been used by Pakistan against the Indian troops in 1965, 1971 and 1999 armed conflicts and later utilised it for giving teeth to its proxy war in Jammu and Kashmir. It is hoped that Washington, instead of resuming military aid, suspends it in the interest of peace in South Asia. Washington needs India and its support in tackling and containing the evil effects of Sino-Pakistan military and political nexus. |
