| Katra MC not charging tax on pilgrims of Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine: Manohar | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU , Apr 4 : Minister of State for Finance Manohar Lal Sharma informed the Legislative Council that it is not correct that Katra Municipal Committee(MC) is charging tax from pilgrims of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, but it has imposed tax on the amounts payable on account of hiring the services of the Mules, Mazdoors and Dandi. Replying to a calling attention motion by Mr. Jugal Kishore, the Minister said that the amount so collected is an important source of revenue for Municipal Committee Katra and is used for various developmental activities and providing myriad Municipal Services, including sanitation and Solid Waste disposal.
The Minister said that the Katra Municipal Committee, as per the powers vested with it under section 77 sub-sectors (1)(iii) of the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act Svt 2008 (1951-a) and with the prior approval of the Government, has imposed a tax @ 12 % on prescribed rates on hiring the services of Mul-es, Mazdoors and Dandi with effect from 01-04-2001. Even though, the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2008 has been repealed and replace by the Jammu and Kashmir Municipal Act, 2000, however, the proviso to section 311 (1) (d) protects all the actions taken or the orders issued pursuant to the earlier Act. |
